Residence Building for Wen Ming Chu Architects & Associates

At the city's edge, overlooked sites with irregular geometry hold potential for renewal. Yuan Feng Jing was born from the pursuit of wholeness within imperfection. Tower A rises like the sun, square and composed, while Tower B curves like the moon, soft and welcoming. Distinct yet complementary, the two volumes reflect each other through air and light. In the courtyard, their silhouettes overlap in quiet dialogue. By dusk, outlines dissolve into warmth and rhythm, embodying the clarity of belonging: this is home.

Unique Properties

The project's defining feature lies in its contrast and integration of form. On two irregular sites, 1871 and 555.3 sqm, the architects created a 19-story square Tower A and a 12-story oval Tower B. Their varied heights and shapes evoke 'sun and moon in harmony, water and greenery in balance.' Tower A’s square form is softened with curves, while Tower B's oval form adopts vertical rhythms. A flipped floor plan orients lower units inward to a landscaped courtyard, while higher floors open to panoramic views of the 40-hectare Weiwuying Park.

Production Technology

The facades use white and gray tones to express a minimalist modern vocabulary, enriched by layered materials. Tower A's curved balconies are clad in white mosaic tiles with cement grout, appearing smooth from afar yet textured up close. Tower B's staggered grille bars turn balcony railings into rhythmic surfaces. Rooftops feature white perforated aluminum panels, creating a laced play of light and shadow. The composition blends purity with layered detail, offering texture and interest from every angle.

Design Challenge

The greatest challenge was managing the site's irregular geometry and fragmented parcels. Tower B's oval lot, just 555.3 sqm, was first considered viable only for mechanical lift parking. Insisting on a sloped, flat solution, the team conducted extensive simulations and coordination to deliver 14 independent spaces, showing detail and user focus. Another challenge was Tower A's flipped layout: above the 7th floor, living rooms were rotated 180 degrees for optimal views, requiring precise integration of exhaust, circulation, and structure.

Project Duration

The project finished in Taiwan.

Operation Flow

Yuan Feng Jing makes its mark not through mass but through vision for a better urban future. Eschewing density-maximizing strategies, the architects preserved open space, returning land to light and air while creating a refined residential community enriched with cultural ambiance. Upon completion, it quickly became a local landmark. Residents praise its rare proximity to both water and greenery, especially Weiwuying Park, while architecture students and professionals visit it as a model of contemporary residential design.

Research

Located in Kaohsiung's Fengshan District, Yuan Feng Jing integrates irregular urban lots into a dual-tower residence. Using the concept of 'one square, one circle; one tall, one low; one front, one back,' the architects turned site constraints into sculptural dialogue. Tower A is square and rational, Tower B oval and soft, together forming an urban rhythm of sun and moon. Instead of maximizing density, the design favors openness, green space, flipped floor plans, and deep balconies, enhancing views, livability, and community vitality.

Inspiration

Located in a quiet alley in Kaohsiung's Fengshan District, the project site integrates a former parking lot with fragmented parcels, forming a unique polygonal lot. The architects initiated the design with a 'twin-tower master plan' concept, seeking to transform urban edge plots, often seen as leftover or irregular, into a rhythmic and orderly residential community. Embracing the complexity of the site, the architects responded to the urban texture by proposing a dialogue of 'square and circle, tall and low, front and rear,' ultimately shaping a rhythmic and spiritually symbolic landmark.
