CareAI is an AI-driven mobile application that helps uninsured and underinsured patients navigate overwhelming medical bills with dignity, clarity, and ease. It addresses one of the leading causes of financial distress—medical debt—by simplifying access to charity assistance programs that are often fragmented, complex, and time-consuming. Through CareAI Pro, an interactive voice-first assistant, the app guides users step by step, translating bills into plain language, checking eligibility for assistance, and offering practical pathways toward financial relief and wellbeing.

CareAI uses a cloud native microservices architecture with FHIR compliant data models for secure healthcare interoperability. The AI core leverages natural language processing NLP and voice first HCI frameworks to deliver an intuitive assistant experience. The app is built using React Native for mobile, Node.js for backend services, and integrates with third party APIs for eligibility checks and financial aid programs.
The hardest challenge was making dense medical bills understandable without losing accuracy or violating privacy. Patients felt shame discussing debt, while aid programs were fragmented and hard to navigate. To solve this, we used plain-language mapping, iterative user testing, and voice-first design to build empathy and trust. By combining legal compliance with human-centered design, CareAI turned a confusing, isolating process into a secure and supportive journey.
The project started in December 2024 in Dallas and finished in March 2025.
Users log in and scan or upload their bill. The app presents a simple summary of charges. Next it checks what aid programs may apply and shows clear options. Guided by CareAI Pro, users follow step by step instructions to apply. They can track status, get reminders, explore resources, read community updates, and view progress in their profile. The flow is upload, understand, check aid, act, track, and learn.
CareAI design research aimed to reduce patient stress and improve access to aid. Using human-centered design and mixed methods, we conducted surveys, interviews, and bill analysis with uninsured and underinsured patients. Findings showed confusion, emotional strain, and barriers to support. Insights shaped a voice first tool that simplifies bills, saves time, and restores trust advancing healthcare equity, financial relief, and inclusive design.
CareAI draws inspiration from the struggles of patients facing overwhelming medical bills. It merges artificial intelligence with empathy, creating a platform where clarity meets compassion. The app is born from the belief that every patient deserves dignity and that collective innovation can ease financial burdens. It empowers individuals to navigate healthcare with confidence, one bill at a time.
