Production Technology
The collection employs precision steel tube bending and powder-coating for all structural elements. Seats are crafted from sustainably sourced European beech, sculpted in three dimensions for ergonomic comfort without upholstery. Steel components use 20mm tubular profiles with welded cross-brace reinforcements, thermolacquered in two signature colors. Adjustable models incorporate gas-lift telescopic columns engineered for durability. Each piece ships fully assembled for structural integrity.
Design Challenge
The core challenge was concealing height adjustment mechanisms, a gas lift column and telescopic tube, within silhouettes slim enough to read as fixed furniture. Extensive prototyping resolved structural stability versus visual minimalism. Weld joints and cross brace geometries were iterated to achieve 20 mm tube profiles that support weight without visual bulk. Equally demanding was the material balance between industrial steel and organic beech so neither dominates across four typologies.
Project Duration
The Camarade collection was designed by Big-Game studio in Lausanne, Switzerland between 2024 and 2025. Concept development spanned three months of research into contemporary workspace and hospitality seating. Prototyping involved iterative testing of height-adjustment mechanisms, weld-joint geometries, and beech-forming techniques across twelve prototypes. Material sourcing prioritized European beech and French steel suppliers. Produced by Editions Antifer, France, launched January 2026.
Operation Flow
The collection features intuitive height adjustability across two pieces. The table transforms from dining height at 75 cm to bar height at 102 cm via a mechanical column, accommodating seated meals and standing gatherings. The adjustable stool complements this with a gas-lift spanning 59 to 78 cm, adapting to counters, bars, or workstations. Fixed-height stools provide reliable seating at dining (45 cm) and bar heights (65 cm). All pieces share unified design language enabling free combination.
Research
Research employed observational and behavioral methods across residential, hospitality, and workspace settings. Big-Game conducted field studies in cafes, homes, and coworking spaces in Switzerland and France, identifying demand for adaptable furniture transitioning between formal and informal use. Users require collections functioning cohesively while each piece keeps its identity. These insights informed the shared design DNA. Tapered legs and cylindrical pedestals unify four typologies.
Inspiration
The project revisits the constructive honesty of modernist utility furniture, elevated by Swiss precision. Big-Game drew inspiration from silent companions. Objects serving multiple functions without demanding attention. The duality of cold steel and warm beech mirrors hybrid contemporary interiors where home becomes office and cafe becomes meeting room. The goal was to engineer a system where height-adjustment mechanisms remain invisible services to the user rather than features on display.
