Production Technology
Each piece is meticulously handmade using filigree and silk grain engraving techniques. Fine gold threads outline its lively contours like embroidery, while delicate carving defines its facial structure and soft fur, infusing the piece with lifelike vitality and a smooth handfeel. The large gold cash coins are adorned with gemstones and diamonds, exuding a noble brilliance. The high jewelry grade rail setting ensures secure, seamless inlay and elegant, comfortable wear against the skin.
Design Challenge
The challenge is to overcome the rigid, old image of Pixiu jewelry and create a new form that aligns with modern aesthetics. While preserving liveliness, the design softens facial expressions of Pixiu, reducing severity. It integrates many Chinese elements. The ears take the shape of ingots, symbolizing the gathering of wealth and prosperity. The eyebrows and whiskers are styled with auspicious cloud patterns, creating a dignified yet friendly expression and a protective presence.
Project Duration
Designed and developed in Beijing in January 2024, the product was launched in China in June 2024.
Operation Flow
The round eyes of Pixiu operate through a gravity lever mechanism, allowing the eyes to open and close with the movement of the wearer, symbolizing eyes open to attract wealth, eyes closed to safeguard wealth. The ingot shaped ears with a rebound structure move with a gentle touch, adding a playful charm. Joined using clamping technique, the two gold cash coins can be flipped with fingertips. The large gold cash coin at the bottom can rotate 360 degrees, creating a wealth in hand effect.
Research
Through research, the design team found that traditional Pixiu accessories tend to emphasize auspicious symbolism while falling short in aesthetic appeal. Often regarded as lucky charms, they struggle to meet the fashion tastes of contemporary young consumers. In response, the team reimagined Pixiu through modern design language, playful interactive features, and refined craftsmanship, creating a piece that both inherits cultural depth and aligns with modern aesthetics.
Inspiration
Pixiu is an auspicious creature in Chinese mythology, revered and loved for its power to draw in fortune and ward off evil. Traditionally crafted as ornaments or accessories, it embodies wishes for prosperity and safety. By drawing on the lively expressions of the Jade Pixiu of the Han Dynasty, the piece breathes new life into the ancient mythical creature for contemporary wearers through modern design language and fine jewelry craftsmanship.
Project Overview
Pesiu Pendant has been a Bronze winner in the Jewelry Design award category in the year 2025 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Bronze A' Design Award is given to outstanding designs that showcase a high degree of creativity and practicality. It recognizes the dedication and skill of designers who produce work that stands out for its thoughtful development and innovative use of materials and technology. These designs are acknowledged for their professional execution and potential to influence industry standards positively.
