Unique Properties

Icebergs are produced as a small scale interior series in Finland. By connecting the interior sculptures, it is possible to build mountain ranges, mental landscapes made of glass. The trick in the decorative items is the cold mark of glass. It gives the objects their inimitable surface structure, like the finger print of an object.

Production Technology

The realization techniques mimic the different states of ice. The dim and frosty surfaces are sandblasted. The colors of the glass are handmade from metal oxides. Surfaces are also cracked hot by dipping hot glass in cold water. Icebergs are mouth blown and shaped in 4 different metal mold.

Design Challenge

The technical challenge was to highlight the recycled materials mistakes in an aesthetic way. This was approached by hand making the glass colors from metal oxides and also by using surface techniques that work in erratic ways. The creative challenge was to capture the fragile nature of Northern scenery into glass.

Project Duration

Icebergs were exhibited in Venice Glass Week's HUB in 2019, Scandinavian Pavilion of The Interior Lifestyle Tokyo Japan and Designboom Pavillion in Toronto Interior Design Show.

Operation Flow

Interior sculptures can be arranged into a landscape like installations. The surface of each object is always unique. Ice peaks have multiple surface textures that also create interesting optic illusions and reflections. When light is gleaming trough the glass, shadow looks like water.

Research

The challenge was to create a recycled glass interior sculpture that works as a decorative item and get the value from timeless design and Northen scenery. The project highlight the surface textures that are often seen as mistakes of glass, such as a cold mark of the glass. Cold mark occurs when the hot glass touches cold metal and material wrincles. In the decorative items this is used as a surface texture that makes the material look more like ice.

Inspiration

The main philosophy behind the Iceberg sculptures is to reflect the climate change. Therefore the material used is recycled glass. The series is inspired by fragile Northen nature. Textures, colors and the athmosphere of the glass pieces resonate the unparalleled scenery of the icy mountains.
