Reading Lamp for Lexilife

The Lexilight lamp allows dyslexic person to read easier, faster, longer and without eye strain. Designers have found their inspiration observing interactions between children who learn reading and their parents or teachers, and it becames obvious that adult aesthetical language is very important for child confidence when they read. So the lamp has been designed to look like a caring little friend which, as parents do, bend over the book to help children to read. The overall design has been thought to please both children, teenagers or adults (who also suffers from dyslexia).

Unique Properties

Lexilight, which combines both pulsed and modulated light, erases the mirror picture that a dyslexic person sees. This person is now able to read easier, faster and longer without eye strain. The strength of this design is what designers call the acceptance effect. Dyslexia is a handicap people use to hide, so designers make this lamp a desirable object for children, teenagers and adults. When children see it as a little figure, teenagers see a stylish lamp and adults, a nice piece of art and product design.

Production Technology

Lexilight head is made of ABS with metal painting finishing. Light diffusor is injected in PMMA. The foot is made with ZAMAC and is anodized in a post process. The full lamp is assembled in France in a factory in which 100% of worker are handicaped people.

Design Challenge

The hardest part was to make that lamp desirable for children between 6-10 years but also for teanagers and adults. It was a very difficult to build a design language which could fit a school ecosystem and also a business office or a teenager bedroom.

Project Duration

The project starts in Paris (France) on November 2018 and finished in Saint Malo (France) in October 2019.

Operation Flow

Lexilght is a reading lamp which can be used at home, school or office, wherever people need to read. As many kids need it, Lexilight is delivered with a transport bag which allows them to bring it from home to school each days. When Lamp is installed user have to push on the main button to choose between 2 modes: Lexilight mode or normal light. Two potentiometers allow the user to adjust the light wave by acting on the pulsation and modulation to adapt to each individual.

Research

At first, we decided that more than helping dyslexic children to read, we would like to give them the Will to read. So we focus on when and were kids like to read, and make some design proposals according to. Then we present each concept to children from a school next to our studio and discussed with them on how to improve it. After few weeks the table lamp concept was finalized. Then we make prototypes and we launch a 100 users test. We included remarks about ergonomic, style, colors into the final version which has been tested by 120 children over France during 2 months and validated by them and their parents.

Inspiration

Lexilight is a reading lamp, so it has been design to look like a benevolent little friend which stands up on the desk bent over the book, like parents could do when they teach how to read to their kids. The lamp foot edges/lines have neither a start or an end point, as a metaphor of what reading is: a never ending story.

Project Overview

Lexilight Reading Lamp has been a Bronze winner in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design award category in the year 2020 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition.
