The dynamic installation, Trolley Coaster, was a joint effort between the government and the public. The tracks were designed and produced by glove puppetry stage cart technicians. The Pingtung County Government and Taiwan Design Center collaborated with a private corporation to borrow trolleys for the installation, lowering costs and potential waste of resources. All trolleys part of the trolley coaster will be safely returned to Carrefour after the exhibit to continue serving the public.

Many large exhibits produce a large amount of waste which is why this time, we chose to take advantage of materials that could largely be recycled and reused. As the exhibit would only last for two weeks, we had already planned for where everything will go after the exhibit in the very early stages of planning. We’ve already found a home for the trolleys, scaffolds, motors, tracks, wheels, and canvas. The trolleys were borrowed from private corporation – Carrefour. All trolleys part of the trolley coaster will be safely returned to Carrefour after the exhibit to continue serving the public. The tracks were designed and produced by glove puppetry stage cart technicians. The motors of trolleys and the wheels and tracks will be reused for puppetry stage cart. It could lower costs and potential waste of resources.
The Trolley Coaster is like a roller coaster in an amusement park, attracting people to the exhibition; at the entrance, it is the focus of vision and becomes an important visual for the people to check in; when the people enter the exhibition, the roller coaster becomes a series of links In the background of each exhibition area, the elevated track has invisibly partitioned and visited the exhibition venue.
The project design process started in June 2019 and finished in August 2019. The construction started in August 2019 and finished at 1st October. Taiwan Design Expo’19 started from 5th October to 20th October to public. There were a total 4.25 million visitors, which breaks the records in the number of visitors of Taiwan Design Expo.
Trolley Coaster not only solves the problem of space use, strengthens the concept of exhibition, but also increases the topicality of the exhibition and improves the publicity effect. Shopping in the supermarket is a common experience. The dynamic installation evokes the memory of the supermarket visually and acoustically, echoing the local enthusiasm of Pingtung, bringing the design expo closer to the public.
Trolley Coaster evokes the happiness and anticipation of shopping in the supermarket before the holiday. Two tracks that sometimes overlapping and trolleys winding down the tracks like roller coasters in a theme park. Visitors will be able to see the trolleys coasting down the tracks but also hear the sounds of the trolley which reminds them of a supermarket thus transforming the design expo into a happy and vibrant Super South Supermarket.
