T(h)ree tree is an art installation that combines traditional crafting techniques and digital fabrication technologies. Traditionally bamboo dowels were in use for crafting lanterns and umbrellas in Asia due to its ductility strength. T(h)ree tree installation redefine the usage of this traditional material by utilizing the aid of digital technology. The weaved bamboo dowel structure is joint with a laser-cut acrylic piece, which forms the canopy part of the pavilion.
National Taiwan Normal University, Daisuke Nagatomo, NTNU Museum, Department of Design
The 3mm bamboo dowels are hand braided into structural column, which composed with 72 dowels. The column part and canopy part are combined with acrylic joint, which is laser cut from 5mm thickness sheet. At the bottom of tree, there is a plywood bench fabricated with CNC milled from 18 mm thickness sheet. The bench also host LED lighting fixture to illuminate the structure at night.
Three Tree is continuous design research with the bamboo dowel structure art. The art employs digital modeling and fabrication technologies, while the art is handcrafted. The creative challenge negotiates with the time frame and skill level difference when the project has developed. These issues more likely affect the outcome of the artwork.
The project started in July 2020 in Taipei and finished in November 2020 in Taipei.
The installation incorporates lighting illumination and also street furniture. The audience can take a rest on the seating while enjoy the dramatic lighting effect through the braided bamboo structure.
This project is continuous research project of how to combine traditional crafting material with digital technologies, such as digital fabrication. In this installation, the structure forms three canopy combined to form tree like configuration to match the exhibition theme of "In the name of tree."
The organic form of bamboo structure fines its inspiration from the trees around the NTNU art museum to combine the theme of the art event In the name of the tree. Each acrylic joint piece host illustrated characters to incorporate the culture of the NTNU art museum neighborhood. At the base of the installation, there is a morpho-shape bench to experience the atmosphere while resting.
