Lighting for Mónica Pinto de Almeida
The suspension lamp Mondrian reaches emotions through colors, volumes, and shapes. The name leads to its inspiration, the painter Mondrian. It's a suspension lamp with a rectangular shape in a horizontal axis built up by several layers of colored acrylic. The lamp has four different views taking advantage of the interaction and harmony created by the six colors used for this composition, where the shape gets interrupted by a white line and a yellow layer. Mondrian emits light both upwards and downwards creating diffused, non-invasive lighting, adjusted by a dimmable wireless remote.

In the creative and production process I began with hand sketches to get a better understanding of the piece. After that the 3D process started as well as the study of all the technical aspects in terms of lighting features and materials, then together with the manufacturer I started to build the first prototype. The lamp is made in several coloured acrylic, with stainless steel cables for its suspension. Mondrian has light both upwards and downwards creating diffused, non-invasive lighting.
The main creative challenge for this lamp was definitely to achieve the balance of colors in order to create a piece with a reduction of forms and pure lines, where the shapes, lines and colors were able to coexist in pure balance and reenforce their harmony.
The project began in February 2019 with research and inspiration. This was followed by designs, sketches and the first prototype. The adjustments and the production of the first piece was finished in December 2019.
The Mondrian, suspension lamp can be easily adapted in height trough the stainless-steel cables, accordingly to the needs of the user and the space chosen to its installation. It supports, as well, a wireless remote control to adjust the intensity of the desired light. The lamp brings an imminent colorful element to the space and a dynamic flow with its different four views and colors.
This lamp came from an idea hidden for a long time in my subconscious. When I translated it on paper, I wanted it not only to be a source of light, but also enable it to transmit something more, express emotions through colors, volumes, and shapes. Due to my painting and artistic studies background I got the inspiration mainly on colors and Art. My research was based on the influence of colors towards the human beings, their use on different cultures and how the art movements got shaped and represented by color. I was inspired by Mondrian, and the movement of Neo-plasticism.
This lamp came from an idea hidden for a long time in my subconscious. When I translated it on paper, I wanted it not only to be a source of light, but also enable it to transmit something more. Mondrian lamp combines the concept of modernity with the specific aesthetics of the 20th century. The name leads us to its inspiration, the painter Mondrian, and the movement of Neo-plasticism, with the search for clean elements, reduction of forms and pure lines.
