The building rises through the land. The obtained stones become the ground floor volumes and the lighter second volume stands on them. Ground which becomes stone and stone which becomes sand. Theoretically nothing is lost and everything is recycled. The ground get shape into a basement, the stone gives form to the ground floor and the plaster stands delicately above them, shaping the second level. The continuity between interior and exterior spaces is reinforced by the floor to ceiling openings and the floor tiles which extend towards the outer space.
Principal request was to propose a project that had to respect the natural contest and in the meanwhile to be contemporary. Furthermore the project had to respect by law the old existing building permit of a totally different project, regarding the covering surface to the plot, the total volume and the square meters of the house. The underground "cave" was the solution to the clients necessity for more living space.
The house is located in an olive groove in the Southwest Peloponnese, and has a direct view towards the castle of Methoni.
The building rises through the land and its underground part, with the playroom and gym, leads to the pool. The two stone volumes, which follow the topography of the hill, in one part are disrupted to give the most honorable place to a certain olive tree and they host the living room and kitchen in one of them and the guest room in the other. A white volume comes to bridge the two stone structures, following the ideal view towards the castle with the two independent bedrooms. A hidden outer staircase slides outside of the white volume and leads to the rooftop, which offers a 360 degree view to the visitors.
Main goal was the perfect view to the castle and everything else facing the opposite direction was supposed to be solid with narrow openings. The minimum footprint on the ground and the preservation of the existing landscape, was the second approach. By keeping the above points, the challenge was to fit it to our clients brief.
The evolution of the dwelling of the human beings, starting from the cave, passing to one level stone buildings and ending up to a light flying volume above the ground. Main concern was to recycle the obtained ground materials, such as the stone and respecting the trees, in order to have as less impact as possible to the nature, while focusing totally to the perfect view.
