Textile Factory for KA PARTNERS
The second facade covers the upper part of the factory, giving the heavy concrete structure a certain lightness. While uncovered structural elements and exposed infrastructure in the lofty spaces remind its occupants of the industrial environment, the mid-century modern furniture and playful graphic artworks create an almost lofty atmosphere. The perforated facade is refracting the light at different angles according to the position of the sun, blocking out the heat while adding dynamics to the space and offering the occupants privacy from the outside.

Environmental friendly double facade (glass curtain walls and windows as first facade and perforated aluminum panels as second outer facade) controls the natural lighting and climate changes during the day and seasons.

Prefabricated concrete structural system has been chosen as it is fastest and the most economical construction method. This structural feature was taken into account in the design, and all the structural, electrical and mechanical systems were left open to view in the administration area. The custom designed furniture in a predominantly mid century style lends a sense of fun and color, as well as comfort and elegance to the offices and showrooms. By this means it was aimed to strike a new balance with the characteristic features of an industrial building.
The creative challenge was to use very standard prefabricated concrete structural which was common for industrial buildings in the region. We accepted and adopted this challenge as design input. The other challenge was to remove the bulkiness of the general factories.
The project is completed in 18 months in Bursa, Turkey
The operation in the factory is divided in two main section; production and administration/operation and the circulation between these 2 section occurs is in 4 types; blue-collars, white-collars, material/products and customers. The circulations of blue-collars and material/products are heavily intertwined as it requires very close interaction. The circulation of white-collars is the bridge between the production and the customers and interacts with all the functions in the factory. The customer only interacts within the white-collars circulation and with the end products in showrooms. These 4 different circulations are integrated in the design of the factory very carefully to provide maximum privacy and minimum conflict.
The existing factories in the area are visited and analyzed in order to understand the workflow and the operations. The problematic existing flows are redesigned within the concept to provide complete privacy and to protect the intellectual properties. As the corner land facing south and east, the control of natural lighting is researched. According to the sun's track and the purposes of the spaces within the factory, the perforated second facade is designed.
The idea was to make the building one homogenous object, both in terms of the different sections of the factory – production plant, offices and showroom – and in terms of the exterior appearance. In order to create a visual contrast to the heavy concrete, we let the light shine through the perforated facade which makes the building look very light. The interaction between the functions of the factory and the land shape both the building and the ground and it manifests itself through the facade
