Residence for CHEN-WAI Architecture Integrated Design Co.,Ltd.
This project is a retirement residence owned by a retiree who has been retired from a complex business environment but still remains with a pure living mindset. The designer chooses the lotus which symbolizes purity as it is out of the silt but not imbrued to reflect the life outlook of the residence owner while deploying architectural elements to portray the overlapping petals of lotus and the parallel pattern on the petals. On top of that, the matt-finished concrete grey symbolizing a sense of serenity also a humble life.

Interior Design, Architecture, Minimalism, Lotus, Tranquility
Apart from water channeling purposes of the external tile cladding, no surface treatment or cladding is applied to the rest of the building surfaces inside and out. It is an epitome of the designer's realization of minimal material consumption in design, as material minimization takes precedence over the conventional approach of green material utilization.
By whirling the cuboid elements and applying them on the tilted rooftop building structure, the designer changes people's common impression of cuboids placed only horizontal and vertical, creating a different visual perception. The three-floor building can thus look like the two-floor building that reducing the sense of oppression and also allowing more sunlight to shine on the street.
This project is finished in February 2020 in Taichung.
The circular path planned for the first floor of the interior amalgamates the fluidity and connectivity amongst different function spaces. Apart from the convenience-driven functionality, it gives a rise to an environment conducive for family and friendly interactions. The interior of the second floor radiates outwards from the family room as it is the interlocking part across every room on this floor to ensure optimal family interactions.
There are endless possibilities between complete flat and excessive decorating in the performance of the building wall. The designer applies adequate yet detailed patterns onto the flat concrete to avoid dullness due to its utmost tranquility. Therefore, one can get comfortable in the environment with the biggest surface area of the building walls that offer enduring comfort. The meaning of a living space is not only to meet the functional purpose but to take care of resident's state of mind.
This project is a retirement living residence owned by a retiree with a pure living mindset; in the Chinese-speaking literary world, a metaphor of a pristine lotus emerging out of the earth is a subtle reflection of the life outlook of the residence owner; the designer chooses the lotus to articulate the life value of simplicity while deploying architectural elements portraying the parallel pattern on the petal of lotus.
