Residential House for Katsutoshi Sasaki

This residence is the architect's own residence to verify a small but liberating space. After verifying the minimum dimensions required for the rooms, all the room widths are 1.55 m. The depth of the building is 13.5 m. The residents can feel a sense of intimacy from a close distance and a sense of liberation and shared space from a far distance at the same time. The one-room space is supported by a furniture-like 50mm-thick wooden T-shaped structure and 50mm-thick floors. Natural light pours in through the high windows, creating a space of diverse light.

Unique Properties

This house has two 1.55m wide spaces with a 50mm thick T-shaped structure in the centre. The inhabitants can feel at the same time the intimacy they feel in the small width and the sense of sharing a space while being far away from each other. A simple composition contains an ambivalent experience.Natural light from the high windows changes the interior throughout the day. The 55mm floor erases the boundary between architecture and furniture.

Production Technology

The posts are made of thin laminated rice pine 50mm wide. They are joined to the beams to form a T-shape structure. The floorboards are made of 55mm local cypress.

Design Challenge

Changing stereotypes. This was the most important aspect of the project. For example, a width of 1.55m is considered narrow. But when you add length, the room feels different. Earthen floors, high ceilings and wooden fittings are avoided in Japan because they cause cold. In this house, however, the natural light makes it comfortable in winter. The windows are important. The combination of window placement, size and orientation can make all the difference.

Project Duration

The project began in Toyota City, Japan in May 2014 and was completed in January 2018.

Operation Flow

By applying this plan, it is possible to provide a comfortable living environment for the builder with a small site or a small budget. In other words, it is a proposal that opens up the possibility of having a house in any country or region.

Research

The minimum dimensions required for each room in the house were verified. The family is set up for five people. This does not include storage, equipment or appliances. This resulted in a dimension of 1550mm. All the rooms were set up as two 1550mm rooms. Between the rooms there is a structure and storage of 700 mm depth.

Inspiration

It refers to the three houses we have planned in the past. The narrow houses are small in width, but have a mysterious spaciousness by adding height. The house has high windows that provide beautiful light and warmth throughout the day. The houses are arranged in a spiral pattern, each with its own comfortable place. The spacing of the columns is based on the Japanese model.
