Residential House for HHNL Architecture & Interior Design
In Kaohsiung, a city with a beach, Anchor and Sail is the only residence incorporating ocean motifs into the space. It is mapped out by a distinguished construction company for professionals who put great emphasis on socializing and leisure. Prominence and elegance are vigorously pursued in terms of materials, furnishing, fixtures and color schemes, while symbolic vocabulary of an ocean cruise ship is merged, so much so that diversity, variety and fun can be added to daily living, just like a huge ship about to set sail for a promising future.

What makes Anchor & Sail unique is how the spatial limitation of the original bedrooms is removed by “stealing” some space from the common area for the three bedrooms to enlarge the closets. On the other hand, curves are used in the living-dining room to cover and decorate the protrusions in the space to make them less conspicuous, thereby achieving a distinctively gentle feel. By means of ingenuity, a perfect balance between additions and subtractions is achieved.

Compared with the eye-catching common area, the bedrooms on either side are not outshined. By means of meticulous planning, a highly comfy lounging environment is created. While the master bedroom has natural light from only one side, by using a glass divider for the bathroom to make for an open plan, the ocean theme is enhanced, and natural light is ushered into the walk-in closet in the back. To further extend ocean aesthetics, soft curves are profusely used on the walls and ceiling, making the space full of the rhythm of flowing ocean waves. The two secondary bedrooms on the left feature lines and colors that are neat and simple, making for a relaxing vibe. Each room has a separate bathroom and thus is fully functional.
At the entrance, the association with the ocean and ships is prominent, with a round mirror on the vista wall conjuring up the image of a window in a cabin on a cruise ship, implicitly suggestive of the style indoors.
The project finished in July 2020 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
The open space connecting the living room and the dining room is one with four different functions—a home cinema, a dining section, a fireplace area and a wine-tasting section respectively—clearly defining the common area and the private one. Boutique sofas imported from Italy, Edra-On The Rocks, are specifically selected for the product’s design concept so as to present the image of a bay where sailors gather. Without directional limitations, people can watch TV, chat, savor wine or ponder as they wish, and thus it is ideal for different gatherings and events, with great adaptability for various activities.
Apart from the yacht-like bar in the wine-tasting section, and the ceiling in the common area shaped like a billowing sail, the beam in the middle decorated with baking varnish looks like a grand mast on a ship, while the specifically-chosen cloud-like chandelier over the dining table goes perfectly with the billowing sail, making the space full of vivacity and highlighting a distinct ocean vibe. With the blue sky and white clouds, the salty smell of the sea seems to linger in the air.
