The design is the Florasis brand's impression of the Dai minority culture and inheritance in China. The peacock is a symbol of auspiciousness, beauty, and happiness in the eyes of the Dai people. A gold peacock is embedded on this face powder compact’s dark green window with a decorative frame. The lid of this product adopts gold filigree, an ancient traditional Chinese handcraft. Pure gold is made into about 0.2mm filaments. The gold peacock on the lid can be removable and as a brooch to wear. This work functions as both a face powder compact and a piece of jewelry.

Production Technology

This personalized face powder is handcrafted with gold filigree, an ancient traditional Chinese craft. It is a gold processing technique used in ancient China's imperial court. Pure gold filaments as thin as 0.2mm are created. Stacking, piling, knitting, weaving, pinching, filling, assembling, and welding are then used to finish the filigree by hand. Mr. Yuan Changjun, a top Chinese filigree craftsman, created this piece. He has devoted himself to the filigree craft for over thirty years as a representative inheritor of the intangible heritage filigree craft. He holds the title of Beijing Municipal Master of Arts and Crafts.The face powder lid, in addition to the gold filigree handicraft, employs modern 3D printing technology, which makes the motif on the lid clear and precise. This design not only inherits the traditional filigree craft, but also innovatively applies modern technology.

Design Challenge

There are currently only a few gold filigree artisans in China. We were fortunate to find a top-tier craftsman to apply this traditional handicraft to the design of this face powder. The gold filaments used in this work are as thin as 0.2mm. The motif and ornament on the product's surface are created with gold filaments using techniques such as stacking, piling, knitting, weaving, pinching, filling, assembling, and welding. Such handicrafts are difficult to create. Furthermore, the combination of a face powder compact and a piece of jewelry presents a challenge to the structure's design. The structure must be cleverly designed and hidden within the work without sacrificing its beauty. Finally, we decorated the necessary structure and turned it into a lovely decorative detail in the product. The appearance, structure, and product are all perfectly integrated.

Project Duration

The project started in June 2021 and finished in January 2022 in China.

Operation Flow

This design primarily serves as a face powder compact. It can be worn as jewelry in addition to being used as a face powder. The lid's pure gold peacock feather is a removable piece of jewelry that can be worn as a brooch. This design is wearable as well as collectible.

Research

We studied how to combine the traditional Chinese handicraft of gold filigree with modern technology in this work in order to fully exploit the unique advantages of the traditional handicraft and modern technology. The peacock feather-shaped brooch on the lid of the face powder is a study and inheritance of traditional Chinese gold filigree. We collaborated with a top Chinese filigree craftsman. Furthermore, we investigated how to combine the filigree craft with 3D printing technology, resulting in a more precise and clear motif and ornament on the surface of the lid of the face powder.

The filigree peacock can be worn as a brooch. Every feather of the peacock is very clear. Through the window, the peacock seems to be dancing lightly and spreading its wings to fly. Behind the craftsmanship are the designers' respect for and inheritance of traditional Chinese handicrafts and culture.
