Lamps for Awblak
Acorn is a lighting system of sustainable lamps that takes advantage of daylight. Each shade is covered with a mirror on its back side. During the day the mirrors catch sun rays and reflect them deeper into the room, enhancing the amount of daylight inside the space in a natural way. During the night they can reflect a single ceiling-mounted light source and amplify its strength for another sustainable approach or function as regular lamps. The system consists of wall-mounted, ceiling, freestanding, and table-top lamps. Each can be modified by combining the different shapes of shades.

Acorn is a sustainable lighting system concept that utilizes natural daylight. The flip side of each led-lit leaf, circle, or oval is covered with mirrors, which capture sunlight during the day and reflect it deeper into the room, increasing the amount of natural light indoors. At night, the mirrors can reflect a single ceiling-mounted light source, amplifying its brightness for a more sustainable lighting solution. Additionally, the products from the Acorn system can be used as regular lamps.

The technology used to create this lamp is very straightforward - metal tubes attached to a metal body that illuminates with LED-lit panels. However, what sets this lamp apart is the acrylic mirror installed to the back of the LED-lit surface. This treatment is both simple and effective, and it makes a significant difference in the lamp's performance.
The main objective of this project was to assign a second role to an everyday object found in everyone's homes. Acorn achieves this by adding mirrors to the lamp, providing enhanced daylight inside interior spaces and amplifying a single source of light to save energy at night.
The project started in October 2022 and finished in January 2023 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Acorn lighting system contains of a freestanding lamp, a table lamp, a wall-mounted lamp, and a ceiling lamp. Each Acorn product can be customized by creating different combinations of the three basic shapes of the shades - circle, oval, and leaf. Each shape comes in three different sizes, and the shade itself can be rotated around its axis for better adjustment and to capture the sun's rays. Depending on positioning the lamps can also function as backlit mirrors.
The research for this product focused on two main groups: people living in 20th-century homes where smaller windows limit the amount of natural light entering the space, and people living in contemporary homes with wider windows but deeper spaces, which can result in a dark interior. In both cases, a mix of artificial and natural light is often necessary during the day. This is not only unhealthy for the eyes and overall health, but also increases unnecessary electricity consumption.
Like many children, I spent countless hours playing with light and mirrors when I was little, and that childhood memory inspired me to create this product. In today's world, energy conservation is becoming increasingly critical, which naturally provoked me to search for a way to bring additional light into our homes and workplaces without consuming more electricity. My goal was to find a natural and sustainable solution to this problem.
