As the first large-scale event in 2022, the 32nd Hong Kong Book Fair and associated events brought together more than 700 exhibitors offering a diverse experience for shoppers. Adopting "Inspirational and Motivational Reading" as the Theme of the Year, the Book Fair introduces some of the inspirational authors and books of this genre to readers, aiming to bring Hong Kong citizens together and encourage them to seek out motivational books that can empower them to face the challenges ahead, and to emerge stronger after the pandemic.

Unique Properties
Being the first large-scale event in 2022 consists of 55100 m2 exhibition space, the 32nd Hong Kong Book Fair and associated events brought together more than 700 exhibitors offering a diverse experience for shoppers. Since 1990, the Fair has developed from a mere promotion platform for the industry to an annual territory-wide major reading and cultural event for the public of Hong Kong.

Production Technology
Due to the limited setup day, the display items were prefabricated and tested off-site prior to being reassembled onsite. These included the rotatable book stand, display props, and all flipping icons. All panels were made from reusable aluminum structure frames covered with vinyl, polycarbonate, and glass finish. The audio-visual equipment, TV screen, and display furniture were hired by other parties. To be more sustainable in the overall production biodegradable carpets were used.
Design Challenge
3 identical zone: City literature, HK Architecture and Taste of HK was harmony cohere as an Art Gallery of 2022. Aptly adopting the flipping concept on old literature and objects, dynamic transparent reflective planes and an area for infinite reflection completed the hardware for the space. The spatial experience design was completed by a series of bespoke video content highlighting various literature authors, photos, and cultural-related objects.
Project Duration
The duration for the project took 3 months from initial briefing to onsite completion. It was launched from 20 to 26 July 2022 and ran for 7 days. HK Book Fair was located at the Hong Kong Conference and Exhibition Centre HKCEC in Wan Chai, Hong Kong.
Operation Flow
Art Gallery was the focus of Hong Kong Book Fair every year. This year, it was composed of: City Literature, and HK Architecture and Taste of Hong Kong three zones. First, the spreading of descriptive panels creates a museum-look-like atmosphere to enhance the visitor experience by different literature authors. Second, to collaborate with National Geographic, selected photos of iconic Hong Kong architecture photo were spatially displayed on a semi-transparent panel to create a Gallery look-alike. Third, an eye-catching color zoning with various posters, packaging, news clipping, miniatures, and books, to compose nostalgia for Hong Kong’s food culture. Three individual Zones worked in harmony to create a journey for the visitor to walk through, to experience an exceptional and unique sense of Hong Kong’s culture.
Research
Our design rationale was to create a visual series combining with HK Traditional Culture and Objects. This project combined special displays of Art Gallery Exhibitions for visitors to explore HK Food Culture, Historical Authors and Architecture Photos as well as a Kids Comic Area to feature old comic book covers. Following the central theme Inspirational and Motivational Reading, the HK Book Fair 2022 introduced some of the best inspirational authors and books of this genre to renders, aiming to bring HK citizens together and encourage them to seek out motivational books that could help people to face the challenges ahead after the pandemic.
Inspiration
A Neo-composition of Hong Kong heritage and traditional symbols. By using elements from old literatures and objects, book binding and flipping methods as the core to create a unique graphic series of Hong Kong Book Fair. In order to portray the key message of each display, we focused on the interplay between bold icons and solid colors, then turned these to different illustrations expressing the interests of reading books.

Hong Kong Book Fair 2022 Public Exhibition has been a Bronze winner in the Event and Happening Design award category in the year 2023 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition.
