Unique Properties

The landscape upgrading project aims to build the Yichang Riverside Park in Hubei into an urban recreational space that integrates nature with fun and interaction. The design team employed the concept of hyperlinks to expand the riverfront road system and view corridors with comfortable sitting areas where citizens can relish the river view. Furthermore, the team infused diverse businesses into the park while rejuvenating the dock using the scene creation method in a trendy industrial style.

Production Technology

Basic materials: granite stone, maroon bamboo, asphalt materials, decorative/translucent concrete, fibreglass mesh, permeable flexible anti-cracking material, shock absorbing and antislip coloured EPDM rubber topping, wear resistant and plastic washed stone material, Yichang native Three Gorges Stone. Supporting buildings: stilt building structure or earthing roof treatment, floodlight treatment, anodised aluminium panels, curved hollow laminated glass.

Design Challenge

The challenge lies in balancing the ecosystem, traffic, functionality, and cultural innovation. Connecting the Yangtze River ecosystem, urban mountains, and green areas, the design aims to integrate the entire trail system with urban commuter paths, park greenways, riverfront trails, and waterside trails to ensure convenient traffic flow. The dock traces and trendy industrial style coexist harmoniously with the urban space, thereby unleashing the charm of the blend of old and new cultures.

Project Duration

The project started in November 2021 in Yichang, Hubei Province, and finished in June 2023.

Operation Flow

The design team reconfigured the vegetation along the riverfront to enhance unobstructed river views for public enjoyment, enabling the establishment of numerous open spaces and lawns complemented by public recreational facilities. The park thus serves as a communal space for relaxation and refreshment. The park features an ecological and humanistic area, a dock area, a family play area, and other service spaces, offering diverse cultural and recreational options to individuals of all ages.

Research

Riverside Park is a crucial urban public leisure space for the local community. However, owing to its construction timeline, the park is in dire need of renovation. Presently, the mixed architectural styles, industrial relics, and view obstructions of the park, which disrupt the continuity of the green corridor along the river, warrant attention. Consequently, this project endeavours to create a participatory riverside park via various design techniques to balance ecology and urban development.

Inspiration

The Yichang Riverside Park by the Yangtze River has the beauty of the waterside. Inspired by the river view, the design team has incorporated blue, symbolic of hydrology, into the colour of the landscape. This integrates the park with the surroundings, generating a harmonious aesthetic. Moreover, the Lipotes vexillifer theme park and gantry crane are both adorned with dynamic Lipotes vexillifer sculptures. These sculptures not only add fun but also advocate for the protection of the ecology.

Project Overview

Yichang Riverside Park Public Spaces has been a Silver winner in the Landscape Planning and Garden Design award category in the year 2023 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill. Silver A' Design Award recipients are recognized for their contribution to raising industry standards and advancing the practice of design. Their work often incorporates original innovations and elicits a strong emotional response, making a notable impact on the improvement of everyday life.
