Unique Properties

Reminiscent of the beauty of nature, this mushroom lamp brings a soft, magical charm to any room. The mushroom lamps are meticulously hand fabricated and hand stitched by women artisans with utmost care and perfection. The concept behind mushroom lamps was to break away from convention and embrace a sculpted, organic, natural form. Moreover, in contrast to the typical single colored fabric used in lamps of this kind, we have innovated by combining two different fabric colors, elevating its appeal.

Production Technology

The Mushroom lamps are made of a fabricated metal armature, which is powder coated for durability. The fabric is hand stitched by women artisans onto the metal armature. It has an LED light inside for illumination, with options of 20 watts or 40 watts.

Design Challenge

The creative challenge was not only to break away from the stereotypical basic forms typically used for fabric floor lamps but also to ensure the floor lamps maintained good quality and functionality while considering production constraints. One challenge involved trial and error to achieve the correct form of the mushroom so that the fabric does not sag and adheres well to the frame. A second challenge was to ensure that all the parts fit well together and that it is easy to replace the internal light source as well. The third challenge was to ensure that the LED light sources illuminate the mushroom well from all sides.

Project Duration

The Project Started in November 2022 in Mumbai, India & Finished in November 2022 and was exhibited at Raw Collaborative Exhibition 5th Edition in India.

Operation Flow

The Mushroom floor lamps are very easy to operate. One simply needs to plug it into the socket and turn on the mushroom lamps using a foot switch, which is ideal for floor lamps as users do not have to bend to turn on the lamp. The inside LED light source can be easily replaced by unscrewing the top hardware with hands, lifting the mushroom head and base, replacing the LED source with a new one, and then assembling it in the same order.

Research

The online and offline research study was conducted on home product marketplaces and physical stores to understand if there are any natural inspired floor lamps made out of fabric in the market. Visual data was collected via websites and by taking pictures of products in retail stores and homes using personal network. Through our research, we found out that there were only simple fabric floor lamps with basic forms and no innovation. That was the starting point to come up with a nature inspired organic form for floor lamps.

Inspiration

The inspiration was to add joy and a sense of fun to the boring, mundane lifestyles and objects around us. The floor lamps are inspired by the abundant beauty of mushrooms found in nature. The idea was to bring nature inspired forms into our homes, adding a touch of magic to our spaces.

Mushroom Floor Lamps has been a Iron winner in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design award category in the year 2023 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. This recognition is reserved for works that demonstrate a solid understanding of design principles and show creativity within their execution.
