Lux Linea

Ophthalmology Clinic for Eye Care Clinic

Lux Linea is an ophthalmology clinic in Shibuya, Tokyo. The new addition to Total Eye Care clinics in the heart of the Japanese capital takes place on the ground floor of a mixed use building. Lux Linea design addresses two main issues. Glass reflections, and patients privacy. The clinic operates mostly during daytime, when the bright daylight reflects on the glass, obstructing visibility to the inside. The clinic employs a series of panel that plays with light lines through the glazed facades to connect with its surrounding urban environment.

Unique Properties

LuxLinea is an ophthalmology clinic in the mid of the iconic Shibuya district in the heart of the Japanese capital. The clinic employs a series of illuminated transparent panels with linear light motif to create an immersive experience that fits in its urban environment and reflects the technological advancement of the doctors. The project addresses visual problems of glass reflections together with the symbolic of cutting edge medical practice representation.

Production Technology

The space was created using drywall techniques and mostly finished in wall cloth. The light panels are produced using transparent acrylic sheets with an inkjet printed pattern of straight lines. The edges of the panels are illuminated using LED tapes. The light travels through the inkjet pattern creating the illumination effect. The panels and by extension the light lines are duplicated vertically and horizontally using mirrors on the ceiling and walls.

Design Challenge

The clinic operates mostly during daytime, when the bright daylight reflects on the glass, obstructing visibility to the inside. To counter this effect, a series of intriguing vertical lines of light are emitted from the inside attracting the curiosity of the passerby and creates a futuristic lightscape that reflects the doctors cutting edge approach to technology and human sight.

Project Duration

Project start: August 2022. Construction starts: December 2022. Project/Construction End: April 2023. Location: Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.

Operation Flow

The floor plan is shaped as a right trapezoid, with the entrance and reception counter placed on its smaller corner and taking advantage of the two glazed sides. The waiting chairs are arranged along the glass facade separated by a series of transparent panels. These panels are illuminated in vertical lines pattern providing privacy and protection to patients. The more light-sensitive examination and treatment rooms are set in the inner area of the clinic.

Research

Luxlinea is a response to two main challenges. The first one is related to the two facades that are completely glazed. This creates reflections during bright daylight that obstructs the vision toward the interior. But also, the need to connect the interior to its urban environment. The second challenge is the space symbolic and representation. The doctor conducts surgeries using cutting-edge technologies. The space had to be a showcase for the medical advancement.

Inspiration

The design was inspired by Shibuya districts iconic light scene and urban environment. The design was also inspired by kaleidoscopes and their reflective effects. And thirdly the design was inspired by the high tech capabilities of the doctors operating in this clinic. The intersection of these three factors gave birth to the immersive spatial experience that is not only offered to the users of the clinic but also to the passers by and the city dwellers.
