Outdoor Trash Classification for S.H.A.W.ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN STUDIO
This project was initiated at 2017 Urban Design Festival, with theme of “Creating Better City Life Through Design”, a design campaign co-produced by Urban China Magazine and AssBook. Xu Zhifeng was invited as designer to renovate a small part - 20 litter bins on the Yuyuan Road, which enjoys everlasting reputation for its cultural and architecture beauty and value. After interview with the sanitation workers, Xu decided to keep only the same liners and ex-dimensions, create a whole new outlook by minimal material, details, signs and colors, max functions of the bin embed a smoking station.

Unique Properties
A modest unification with bold contrast of maximised functionality and capacity to minimised material and finish, i.e. largest opening for dropping trashes from two sides, painted interior with two vivid colours to indicate recyclable and the others, both user friendly for pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, the upward design ashtray collector, offer better social smoking stations under Shanghai's restricted indoor banned smoking policy. Optimised conductors also simplified maintenance works.

Project Duration
This project took part of the Urban Design Festival 2017 Shanghai, replacing firstly 20 existing bins on Yuyuan Road, between Dingxi Road and Jiangsu Road, more info click http://www.nnndf.org
Operation Flow
The sanitation workers felt happier when maintaining the new bins, since less labor is required to keep all corners clean. One shop owner sent a drink gift to the designer at inspection, because the colours told her immediately where to drop the trashes, instead of reading carefully in different languages etc.
Research
Site interviews with sanitation workers, to collect their opinions of how to redesign and make their work easier. Mapping the existing local bins and analyse the extras on visual communication etc. Budget control.
Inspiration
How to use design to change the dirty images of sanitation facilities, turning the ordinary and the functional into a quality design or even a 'luxury' piece, by purifying the information and reducing the details to earn a respect from the users back to the sanitation workers and themselves. However design is not the single solution but to provide a better hardware to the systematic management, perhaps a smart one.
