Carefully selected raw marble, transfigures into a contemporary design piece, through a semi-handmade process.
In terms of furniture design, the abundance of style variations and expressions, as well as the limitations posed by functionality and material attributes, staying true and literal to producing unique items, presents a significant challenge. Regarding Slice of Jupiter and 01, the collection of which it is part of, Alex Mint addressed this challenge by selecting the inherently unique marble as the primal raw material. Other material and color combinations, as well as the overall handmade process, further enhance uniqueness and originality.
Collection "01", part of which is Slice of Jupiter, was designed between September and November 2017. Production followed shortly after, i.e. December 2017 and January 2018. Selected items, including Slice of Jupiter, have been exhibited at Maison & Objet (2018, Paris) and IMM (2019,Cologne), as well as Good Design Greece (2018, Athens). Slice of Jupiter has also been published in Elle Deco (Middle East), issue 22.
The natural attributes of the primary raw material, i.e. marble, combined with the fine craftsmanship and the handmade process, ensure that each Slice of Jupiter is like no other. In that sense, users possess a truly unique piece of furniture.
The research behind Slice of Jupiter was carried out more as a part of journey to a personal design identity. Years of professional architectural experience, meshed with sound technical and aesthetical understanding of marble were employed to adress material combination, geometry, furniture and product design. In fact, this is a dynamic process, conditioning and distinguishing my extended body of work. Regarding Slice of Jupiter, after forming a specific framework, applicable to a high-end, hand-crafted coffee table, selected supplementary materials and structural designs were tested, to identify optimum combinations. Findings were further confirmed by full scale models, which in turn ascertained the final product specifications.
Slice of Jupiter is a product of a personal bond to marble and the drive to experiment with its versatility, uniqueness and naturalness.
