Yard for Evolution Design
Located in Zhangjiazhuang Village, Beijing, Shared Yard shows the designers’ initial exploration of the modernization of rural architectures. Its future mission is a four-room boutique homestay, which can be self-occupied or for business. Surrounded by trees and vegetable fields, the yard has the advantageous natural beauty. Therefore, the new architectures are designed to embrace the hills and trees that surround the site, bath in natural sunlight, and contain a rich spatial experience.

Unique Properties
The project is a rural guest house on the outskirts, which is required to provide an entirely different lifestyle for people living in cities for a long time, while meeting the functional needs of modern life. From a macroscopic perspective, by preserving and respecting rural culture and introducing a new business model, it is leading a transformation of culture and economic structure, and creating a life fashion unique to the North China.

Design Challenge
How to make an eco-friendly building? We used suitable construction methods and old materials recycled from the village to eliminate the invasion. The new buildings are under the shade of trees we preserved, being designed in a ventilated position so that air conditioning is unnecessary in summer. All the fruits and vegetables needed for life come from the surrounding vegetable fields and orchards. Rainwater and purified living water are used to irrigate the fields through a drainage system.
Project Duration
The project started in May 2019 and finished in October 2019 in Beijing, China.
Operation Flow
The abandoned house was reconstructed, and the completed buildings not only brought the rural experience to the urbanites, but also provided the villagers with a more advanced community environment and gradually increasing income. While attracting tourists and driving the new economy, the yard built based on local culture, inspiring villagers to get a new understanding of their local and cultural value, offering a new choice of selecting an occupation and building a living space.
Research
How to treat traditional architecture is always an important issue in rural construction. The old houses on the site are typical of rural dwellings in northern China, with wooden window frames, brick walls and tiled roofs that have survived for generations. So our team first preserved the old house carefully and then connected it to the new building. We used old materials recycled from the village to complete the dialogue between traditional dwellings and contemporary architecture.
Inspiration
For architects, it is hard to find the possibility of diversified development of city and nature, while the countryside with rustic charm is a fertile land of hope, which is enough to rebuild the relationship among humankind, architecture and nature, internalize and shape tradition and current local culture, thus making them become visible and perceivable forms and symbols and permeate into the life.
