The modular shell is entirely made of aluminum and premium-grade stainless steel, machined in the hills of Northern Italy. A protective layer of aerospatial aluminum oxide protects these metal surfaces from scuff marks and deep scratches. The outer carrying box is made of recycled wood, machined and assembled here in Italy. The magnetic stand is made of powerful neodymium rare-earth magnets made in Japan.
You can make beautiful, robust and well-thought products, but if the end price is too high, very few people will be able to experience them. So, the biggest challenge and successful achievement for this project was to keep prices low despite the use of premium materials and while keeping 100% of manufacturing here in Italy.
The project started in 2017 in Brescia, Italy. Final prototypes were ready in 2019. In early 2020, Relio 2020 was presented to the market and quickly sold-out its initial production batch.
Relio is a professional lamp that mimics sunlight. A series of modular parts combine together to form a tiny, powerful light source that can either become a desktop lamp, a wall lamp, a ceiling lamp or a professional photographic instrument. Magnets, metals and 3D-printable add-on accessories are the core of its modularity.
Historically, professional and scientific instruments are engineered without too much attention to their design. In this project, I wanted to embrace the design rules that usually apply to consumer products (modularity, simplicity and minimalism) to create a professional device that is both easy to use and easy to repair. This approach resulted in a robust and maintainable product. A core requirement for professional tools!
My passions - modularity and openness - are the inspiration for Relio. Modularity, because I wanted to create a professional instrument able to transform into various shapes to cover as many functions as possible. Openness, because many parts of Relio are released as 3D-printable Open-Source files, so anyone can expand Relio's functionality and customize it for every need. These features make Relio able to withstand years and years of intense usage, while keeping high repairability and upgradeability scores. The best of both worlds!
