Clubhouse for MDO
Qinglong Clubhouse is the core of a new elegant residential development in Hangzhou. The clubhouse is the social heart, a place for residents to enjoy the surrounding lush landscape. Designers see the clubhouse as a gateway, bridging between the architecture and the landscape. They define the project through three main key-words: Pure, quiet, and calm. The design is distilled to express the pure fundamentals of architecture – light/shadow, space, materiality, and transparency.

Qinglong Gucuiyinxiu Clubhouse tries to create a language of purity and quietness. As social gathering place for the residents, it aims at creating an island of relaxation and escape from everyday stresses. The geometrical compositions, the choice of the materials and details establish a focus on the processional qualities of the spaces, embracing the users at its passage, revealing itself through silent transitions and welcoming images.

The purity of the geometry is emphasized by the use of white stone, giving an abstract feeling to the composition. Relevant throughout the project is the use of timber, that populates mainly the communal areas, giving warmth to the space. The areas of the spa are kept more pure and ethereal through the use of stone and paint, creating a distance between the visitor and the architecture, to allow to focus on the inner peace. The private areas display an higher amount of decoration and metals.
The control of proportions has been a fundamental part of the design process. All the elements and their geometries create a system that arouses sense of monumentality and purity. The hardest elements to achieve were the mortise-and-tenon structure, that spans 9 meters without making use of any fixing material. The hand-made art pendant in the centre of the staircase has been developed through a rigorous parametric rationalization and development alongside with a local brass craftsman.
The project is located in Hangzhou, China. Completed in 2019.
The fruition of the spaces happens starting from the exterior rich landscape. Once entering the clubhouse, the space reveals itself with a strong view to the outside spaces. The monumental staircase, remembrance of Chinese glorious craftsman traditions, leads down to the lower floor, where the lounge and display area are located. The transition to the wellness area is marked by the lighting, getting dimmer and arising a feeling of quietness and contemplation.
The clubhouse spaces are an invitation to leave back the stresses of everyday life while enjoying a moment of self-care. The purity of the forms is a strong statement and generates a certain contemplative distance with the visitors. Along with our research on purity and silence, we brought forward an exploration of Chinese traditional crafts, expressed by the mortise-and-tenon structure around the staircase and the pendant installation, joining parametric design to hand-fabrication.
We have been inspired by the surrounding calm landscape, to develop an architectural language of purity. Every element of the design has to join a common dialogue of calm serenity. We tried to make the lush landscape resonate inside the spaces through games of transparency and reflections. Chinese traditional craft has also been of major inspiration, through the development of a fully mortise and tenon joinery technique screen around the main staircase and the old brass pendant installation.
