Wallpaper for YO2 designs
A fine surface breaking reveals an even more valuable surface made of precious metals sheets, a metaphor for this troubled time the world is going through. The design recalls the Kintsukuroi, the Japanese art of repairing breakage with gold, a philosophy that treats breakage and repair as part of history, symbolizing resilience and a new beginning. This digitally printed wallpaper shows a heavenly natural scene falling apart with a silver lining, un unexpected shining surface of precious metals emerging like the universal matter. The hardest part of this design is surely the technical part, combining the complex design with the metallic finishes mantaing a high resolution for a high profile product trough transparencies, cutting masks and very hard work
The project started during the 2020 pandemic, when every certainty fell apart into our minds a new value arose, a rediscovery of our inner needs, the inspiration for this design. With the collaboration of YO2 Design, the project has become a reality, a new wallpaper brand in the 2021 catalog.
Kintsukuroi is a high profile wallpaper with a minimal design took from ancient japanes white and blue ceramic plates, available with different metallic finishes as gold, bronze and silver. It has a size of 650 x 270 cm but could be adapted and cutted in shape of the customers needs. It fits perfectly a baroque room same as a minimal one, a piece of art with a deep meaning every one could purchase.
The research for this design was driven by my love for ceramics and my passion for structured surfaces. I started looking for museum art collections of ancient pottery and found a natural scene, a celestial scene that could break at any second due to its fragile enduring material, an unexpected break . Doing more research on Kintsukuroi, the Japanese art of repairing broken objects with gold I worked a lot on graphic software and on the choice of materials and I created this wallpaper.
This project started with a deep interest in porcelain and world traditions on ceramic materials, the white and blue porcelain tradition of Asian porcelain is certainly one of the most interesting. Combining with the Japanese tradition of Kintsukuroi, repairing broken pottery with gold making it even more precious made a snap in my mind, the natural beauty of blue and gold, like sky and sun. The fine plated surface of a past society that now dashes hopes of what might be behind it.
