The Pearl Inna bed is the first in a series of products that implements the presented sleeping space form factor. The traditional rectangular and aesthetic round shape does not take into account the peculiarities of body movement during sleep. The form factor of the bed in the form of a sector of a circle meets the criteria of ergonomics. This shape opens up space for the movement of the legs and does not interfere with the freedom of the hands. Aesthetics and emotionality are comparable to the impact of the contour of a circle, while having a significant superiority in functionality.

Unique Properties

The Pearl Inna bed noticeably differs from the well-known rectangular and round counterparts in its form factor of a sleeping place in the form of a circle sector. This form factor is closer to the criteria of ergonomics. Optimizing space, it gives freedom of movement and gives a comfortable sleep. The aesthetics and emotionality of this form is comparable to the effect of the contour of a circle, while having a significant advantage in functionality.

Production Technology

The manufacture of the product does not require expensive technologies and complex technical solutions. Bed materials are natural and environmentally friendly. The ribs of the frame are cut out of plywood on a CNC machine. Between them is a voluminous cardboard forming a spherical profile. The headboard and its sliding elements are made of bent plywood. The outer belt of the mattress is covered with a layer of high density foam. Upholstery materials can be leather, eco-leather, textiles.

Design Challenge

The most difficult thing about this project was to find a balance between maximum functionality, perfection of form and and the manufacturability of the content.

The Pearl Inna bed was designed in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Operation Flow

This bed has many additional features. 18 degree headboard angle, comfortable for reading and meditation. The soft outer belt of the mattress serves as a bedside bench anywhere along the contour. The spherical console of the body eliminates obstacles for the legs, and the space under it is easily cleared. The side facade in the open position turns into a mobile serving table with LED lamp. In the same position, access to the shelves for linen and cosmetics on the full extension rails opens.

Research

Despite its dimensional characteristics, the Pearl Inna bed will organically fit into a room with dimensions of 6x4 meters, which is not uncommon for modern rooms. And even there, the bed will not be bulky thanks to two features: an external contour that leads the eye to infinity and a spherical console that hides the base in its shadow. This creates a feeling of floating, which, however, does not affect the reliability of the design.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this product was the shape of the seashell, which gives birth to the miracle of pearls. The muse of this inspiration is my wife Inna, after whom this project is named. In Ukrainian, pearl sounds like perlina - Pearl Inna.

Project Overview

Pearl Inna Bed has been a Iron winner in the Furniture Design award category in the year 2021 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Iron A' Design Award is awarded to good designs that meet the rigorous professional and industrial standards set by the A' Design Awards. This recognition is reserved for works that demonstrate a solid understanding of design principles and show creativity within their execution. Recipients of the Iron A' Design Award are acknowledged for their practical innovations and contributions to their respective fields, providing solutions that improve quality of life and foster positive change. These designs are a testament to the skill and dedication of their creators, showcasing their ability to address real-world challenges through thoughtful design.
