Digital Artworks for Out of Blue

Observation of infrasound generated by natural phenomena is attracting attention In Japan, where natural disasters occur frequently. Infrasound cannot be heard and seen, but infrasound generated by volcanic eruptions, for example, can be transmitted far and can be observed from a safe distance in order to avoid disaster. In collaboration with the Earthquake Research Institute of the University of Tokyo, experimental artworks in which infrasound is visualized and made audible were created to stimulate the sixth sense, the ability to sense nature, which modern humans have lost.

Unique Properties

It can't be heard by the human ear and can't be seen, but infrasound generated by volcanic eruptions, for example, can be transmitted far and researchers can observe from a safe distance. In collaboration with the Earthquake Research Institute of the University of Tokyo, an experimental work which infrasound is visualized and made audible was created to stimulate the sixth sense, the ability to sense nature, which modern humans have lost.

Production Technology

In collaboration with the Earthquake Research Institute of the University of Tokyo, infrasound data measured during the eruption of Mount Yasur volcano Tanna Island, Vanuatu, were made audible and visualized by programmed software.

Design Challenge

The creative challenge in this research was to design a form of communication that stimulates what could be called the sixth sense, the function of sensing nature, which modern humans have lost. To this end, we attempted to design the system while understanding the advanced analysis techniques used by researchers at the Earthquake Research Institute of the University of Tokyo on a daily basis.

Project Duration

This artwork was launched worldwide, in June 2022. It will be open to the public for a minimum of five years. (It will be extended wherever possible).

Operation Flow

These are videos and static images as Digital artworks.

Research

The research question for this work is what can design do for sensory communication of natural events that cannot be seen or heard and aims to communicate an understanding of natural phenomena analyzed by researchers to the general people. In collaboration with the Earthquake Research Institute of the University of Tokyo, the infrasound data generated by volcanic eruptions, which is analyzed by researchers, is visualized and made audible by obtaining feedback from participants. And the artworks were designed to stimulate what could be called the sixth sense, the human sense of nature.

Inspiration

Waves of infrasound (low frequency sound) caused by natural events can be transmitted far and researchers can observe them and analyze what is happening from a safe distance. By making these processes visible and audible, the reproduction of the sixth sense could be communicated to audiences.
