Nest

Residence for UrbanCarve Architects Firm

The designer conceptualizes the case around the theme of "swallows' return to the nest," incorporating their preference for a black tile slanted roof. This concept is realized through 2 slanted roof volumes, resembling the wings of swallows. By extending the outdoor paddy field landscape into the interior, the designer creates a captivating spatial experience. Multi-level skylights and patios, including those above balconies and in the attic and hall, add depth to the space while inviting sunlight to bathe the tranquil residence in Yilan.

Unique Properties

For the home of the owner and his wife, the designer takes the concept of swallows' return to the nest as the concept, integrates the owner's preference for the black tile slanted roof, and adopts the two misplaced slanted roof volumes, which resemble the wings of the swallows, as a personal residence for the two sons of the owner.

Production Technology

In terms of the material, the designer makes the roof tile of Yilan's unique seven cent stone integrated with environmentally friendly recycled glass, so that the black and white roof gives out charming luster in dark night and becomes a bright light in wide field.

Design Challenge

It is located on the coast of Zhuangwei and the geology has the suspicion of soil liquefication, so the designer must pay special attention to the material and structure when designing the project, so as to overcome the corrosion of sea water and stabilize the foundation structure of the house. On the other side, the roof, which flutters like a bird's wings, also tests the delicate technique of grouting to avoid water leakage in the future.

Project Duration

The project started in 2015 and finished in July 2018 in Yilan.

Operation Flow

In addition to extending the outdoor paddy field landscape into the interior, the designer also creates multi level skylights and patios in the building, such as the patio above balcony, as well as the skylights above the attic and the hall of the gods, etc., to create a sense of interest in the space through perspective displacement, and also let the bright sunlight of Lanyang naturally flow into such quiet residence.

Research

In the field of the owner's hometown, the designer echoes the image of birds returning to their nests through a unique spatial structure, and also makes the god hall with warm yellow halo, like a lighthouse in the ocean, guiding the direction for the owner's son who comes home to visit his parents. The project becomes a home in the field of strong enclosure, which not only integrates into the natural environment, but also emits unique temperament.

Inspiration

As a resting place for an old couple who retired in Taipei and returned to their hometown, Yilan. The design not only meets the owner's desire for the use of local materials as a jewelry designer, but also integrates the owner's desire for the childhood residence with black tile sloping roof, red brick wall, and overlooking Kueishantao Island. Moreover, the design method is applied to transform the required prayer room and let this be a warm light guiding the field.
