Architectural Pavilion for Melekzeynepstudio

Open Work is a performative spatial space. It is shaped around the metaphors of consciousness and thresholds. Abstract gates and the plan created by surfaces that function like instruments turn into an experience of exchange with the visitor's touch. It intentionally emphasizes monumentality but as visitors interact with the space, this untouchability gives way to an auditory quality and flexibility. This theatrical space is not grounded anywhere and carries its roots along with it, the system is mobile. This structure is also a gentle question mark to the emerging new world right before humans.

Unique Properties

Open Work is an experiment in spatial design where various disciplines collaborate. It is a multidisciplinary structure that combines architecture, sound design, engineering, chemical and material knowledge, as well as sculpture art. In today's design world, it transcends being defined and brings together multiple disciplines, yet it also establishes its own unique range by not conforming to any single discipline. This piece serves as a portal, behaving like a passage, speaking to the consciousness of the world and humanity.

Production Technology

It consists of an independent 24 steel frame structure mounted on a spider like base platform that forms its own foundation. The frames are connected to this platform, and 3879 tubes are suspended from these frames. The connection and suspension details of the tubes are designed to allow both free oscillation and ensure safety, as seen in the attachments. Lighting elements are placed in sockets on this platform. The structure is entirely portable and can be disassembled and reassembled repeatedly, much like a modular system.

Design Challenge

From a technical standpoint, we can say this: the work, being a structure that carries its groundwork alongside and is not tethered to the ground, required us to redesign our relationship with 'place' each time we established it on new ground. This was a crucial factor for us. Sociologically, creating a work that speaks universally and to humanity without a specific corner in today's world was not easy. Producing design as art, for everyone, and as a form of knowledge is a challenging aspect of our era. Everyone expects a narrative for today, but we aimed to create a transcendent work.

Project Duration

The Open Work was produced in the early months of 2023 and exhibited in the courtyard of the historical Somerset House during the London Biennale throughout June 2023. In this exhibition, Open Work selected among 47 countries and 22 universities and it won the ‘Public Award’. Following this exhibition, it was featured in the London Design Festival in September 2023 and it was exhibited as a 'suspended monument' over the River Thames, within the London Skyline. Immediately afterwards, it was exhibited in Taksim Square in Istanbul in November 2023.

Operation Flow

The Open Work is an ironic monument composed of dynamic and sonorous surfaces, intentionally featuring a monumental design. With the visitor's engagement, this solid monument becomes more flexible and transforms into an interactive experience. The acoustic surfaces, made of moving tubes, continuously reshape randomly through human movement and wind, thus turning the monument into a dynamic structure. The visitor finds themselves shaping a swaying and sound-producing monument.

Research

Throughout world history, we researched significant architectural and symbolic figures representing important historical milestones for humanity. Ancient patterns such as doors, borders, monuments, and ancient cities were explored. All of these led us to the fundamental lines and figures in the collective human consciousness. This became the most crucial part of our information and research process when designing a 'theatrical monument.'

Inspiration

Open Work is a performative spatial installation, a theatrical monument. It revolves around the metaphors of consciousness and thresholds addressing concepts such as power, belonging, boundary setting, and the representation of societal hierarchy on an existential ground throughout human history. It draws inspiration from universality.
