The helmet is inspired by 3D Voronoi structure which is widely distributed in Nature. With a combination of parametric technique and bionics, the bicycle helmet has an improving external mechanical system. It's different from traditional flake protection structure in its unabridged bionic 3D mechanical system. When hit by an external force, this structure shows better stability. At the balance of lightness and safety, the helmet aims to provide people with more comfortable, more fashionable, and safer personal protection bicycle helmet.

Production Technology
Main Material: Shell is constructed from carbon kevlar and fiberglass resin with a polystyrene lining.
Design Challenge
It's a key of appearance design to make the structure system adapt to cavity form. In the research process, we have to arrange data interaction mechanism between different algorithm units. Iteration and feedback of data lead to the rationality of final simulation results,
Project Duration
The project started in June 2018 in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China and would be available for mass consumption in July 2020 in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.
Operation Flow
The helmet structure is the important design elements in this design. The helmet's porous characteristic makes it possible to achieve a perfect balance of safety and lightness. And the helmet can get better air permeability and organic cool appearance.
Research
With the parametric technique, we take mechanical simulation experiments of inner structure sampling points. Based on the simulation date, structure sampling points are rearranged properly, and the helmet finally gets an integrated structure system. Considering the convenience of parametric technique, we can directly control the density parameter of the whole structure system, and specification parameter of the supporting system. After mechanical simulation experiments of the latest structure, the result of simulation affects controls parameter, which promotes the helmet's adaptation to different users and usage scenarios.
Inspiration
The helmet is inspired by 3D Voronoi structure which is widely distributed in Nature, for example, the structure of the animal's bone, turtle shell, and even straw, etc. The structure is a natural consequence of natural evolution, which gives the organism perfect physical performance in aspects of lightness, stability and energy interaction. Thus, we apply this parametric technique into the improvement of helmet design. At the balance of lightness and safety, we hope to provide people with more comfortable, more fashionable, and safer personal protection bicycle helmet.
Project Overview
Voronoi Bicycle Helmet has been a Silver winner in the Safety Clothing and Personal Protective Equipment Design award category in the year 2019 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill. Silver A' Design Award recipients are recognized for their contribution to raising industry standards and advancing the practice of design. Their work often incorporates original innovations and elicits a strong emotional response, making a notable impact on the improvement of everyday life.
