Light empowers us to gain freedom from endless feeds and alerts and will never have social media, emails, or data-tracking.

Production Technology

The Light Phone II is available in both black (night) and light gray (light) matte colors, which match the lightest and darkest shade of the E-ink, or electronic paper display. The E-ink display is comparable to other e-reader devices and is characterized by its low power requirements, strong viewing contrast and durability. It eliminates the need for a backlight / harmful blue light of traditional LCD phone screens, easing eye strain and is fully legible in direct sunlight. The screen automatically illuminates the interface when viewing in low light. Light designed the phone to be lightweight, splash-resistant, and small enough that it fits in your pocket. It uses a custom Light OS operating system with a Micro USB charging port and headphone jack.

Design Challenge

Light rethinks the phone experience by taking advantage of the latest technologies through a timeless and refreshing design. All of the tools are custom designed for the Light OS and built with intentionality to accomplish specific tasks. Using the web-based Dashboard, users have full control over adding or removing tools they deem essential. So that users can “go light” more often (or forever), tools in development include: directions, calculator, music player and ride-sharing.

Operation Flow

The Light Phone II is foremost a phone; instrumental in today's world. Light is not a method of memorializing experiences but rather a method to enjoy them in the moment. Light provides a way out from the constant consumption we are inundated with to get back to appreciating tangible experiences and regain meaning and purpose in our day-to-day. It encourages us to leave our smartphones behind from time to time as a refreshing and freeing tool, without feeds or notifications. It’s not about an object to acquire, but a methodology to be exercised daily.

Inspiration

Born as an alternative to the apps and products from tech giants fighting for our attention and data, Light creates products designed to be used as little as possible. People are inundated with apps, feeds and phones engineered to distract us from our lives, and Light Phone II offers the freedom to decide when and how we connect by empowering people to regain sovereignty over digital spaces.

Project Overview

Light Phone II Mobile Phone has been a Iron winner in the Digital and Electronic Device Design award category in the year 2019 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Iron A' Design Award is awarded to good designs that meet the rigorous professional and industrial standards set by the A' Design Awards. This recognition is reserved for works that demonstrate a solid understanding of design principles and show creativity within their execution. Recipients of the Iron A' Design Award are acknowledged for their practical innovations and contributions to their respective fields, providing solutions that improve quality of life and foster positive change. These designs are a testament to the skill and dedication of their creators, showcasing their ability to address real-world challenges through thoughtful design.
