Table Light for Naai-Jung Shih
This light plays an active role to accompany people in a working space from morning to the night. It was designed with people working environment in mind. The wire can be connected to a laptop computer or a power bank. The shape of the moon was made of three quarters of a circle as a rising icon from a terrain image made of stainless frame. The surface pattern of the moon reminds the landing guide in a space project. The setting looks like a sculpture in the daylight and a light device that comforts the tense of work at night.

A light should be designed with people working devices in mind. It needs to play an active role today as a companion from morning to the night. The solution is a sculpture in the daylight and a light device that ease the tense of work at night. This light can be connected to laptop. The metaphor of moon was made by linear pattern that was used as a landing guide of Apollo project. The shape of moon is made of three quarters of circle as a rising icon from a terrain made of stainless frame.
table light, desktop installation, moon, symbolic texture, 3C devices
The source of light is made of LED strip that allocates on the peripheral ring. The stainless frame was collected from a flea market. The moon was made by applying a thicken function to a thin layer of surface. The curvature was modified by a mathematic equation. This shift of design paradigm offers me a great freedom in opening up a whole new set of vocabulary during the creation process. The complicated pattern can only be made by 3D printer. It makes me believe there is a strong connection between the order of mathematics and the aesthetics of a moon icon.
The combination of the two layers of pattern changes from different viewing angles. The most challenging part was to create a visual depth and in the meantime allowed partial visual penetration. Uniform thickness was applied. The plate or disk is about 28 mm thick in the center and gradually grows to 35 mm on the edge. It is covered by a skin 8 mm thick. The thickness and the space in the middle create a sense of depth that changes the micro expression of the surface. The final thickness of components was also adjusted with light transmitted without potential damage to the structure in 3D printing.
This project started as early as 2018 in Taipei. Various types of configuration were explored in several on-and-off tests before s particular setting was determined. The specific set was finalized in 2019. The duration of last presentation was about two months of intensive works.
The light performances as an installation in daylight. It illuminates as a table light when night arrives. The skin acts as an interface. People can see through the double layers to interact with background with enhanced depth. The convex and concave sides of design represent the surface and underground parts of the moon. The light is turned on or off using a USB hub with buttons to control four devices. It can be connected to a power plug or even a notebook computer. People work next to this light can use it to charge a mobile phone. People gather around this light can share this hub and the light as well.
Researches were made to the image of a moon and how a table light should fit in today working space. The alternation of thin gap and media openings has to be maintained in order to guide a flow of focus along the surface. Researches were also made to the textures of the frame that creates a contrast effect with the photosensitive resin. The thickness of pattern was also studied in order to create a depth effect without enlarging the opening. The aesthetic consideration was applied to make a working space more human.
This design was inspired by the moon. Moon is both aesthetic and philosophical to the symbolization of human imagination. The composition of this light can be considered as the moon rising from a mountain or the sea as it departs from the surface to light up surroundings in the air.
