Puli is a double-cap safety pill bottle. The outer cap is connected to the inner cap by tracks. In initial status, the outer cap can be rotated freely while the inner cap will not move. For adult, by pushing the outer cap, two caps will engage by the protrusion and depressions and can be rotated synchronously to open the bottle. For children, it is difficult for them to push the outer cap due to the narrower channel design, thus making the bottle safe.

For adult, by pushing the outer cap, two caps will engage by the protrusion and depressions and can be rotated synchronously to open the bottle. For children, it is difficult for them to push the outer cap due to the narrower channel design, thus making the bottle safe.

Design Challenge

The hardest part of this design activity is to find the most suitable material and thickness of the outer cap. These factors decide whether it is difficult for children to pull the outer cap to open the bottle but not that difficult for parents.

Project Duration

The project started in September 2019 and finished in February in China

Operation Flow

When the bottle is not open, the inner cap and the bottle body are connected by a conventional thread and the outer cap and inner cap are not engaged. If children try to rotate the outer cap to open it, the outer cap just spins but the inner cap will not move. When parents want to open the bottle, the first step is to pull outer cap so the two caps will engage with each other by protrusion and depressions. The next step is to rotate the outer cap so the inner cap can be rotated together to open the bottle.

Inspiration

Most existing safety pill bottles can be opened by experienced children. Therefore, a new bottle structure is needed. Structurally, Puli was inspired by the screwing process. Children may not have enough insight and strength to open the bottle. In appearance, it is inspired by the hip flask. It uses a flat bottle body, which not only gives users a hint to push and pull, but also is easy to carry.

Project Overview

Puli Safety Pill Bottle has been a Silver winner in the Packaging Design award category in the year 2019 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill. Silver A' Design Award recipients are recognized for their contribution to raising industry standards and advancing the practice of design.
