A Wugang Documentary for University of Macau Centre for Arts and Design
This is a photographic documentary of Wugang, the Wuhan Iron and Steel Company. Supported by the Russian and built in 1958, the state-owned Wugang is one of the biggest steel factories in China and once signified the industrialization and modernization of the country. However, such industry causes severe environmental pollution. Through capturing the heavily polluted Wugang campus with somber images, this project reveals the price paid and the consequence behind the glory of modernization and economic prosperity, provoking the viewers into the search of a clean and healthy environment.

Design Challenge
It is very difficult to obtain permission to take photo of this state-owned steel factory. The condition of the photo site is poor and limited, often difficult to get to the ideal places to obtain the best photographic angle.

Research
This is a photographic documentary of a steel factory. The design research points out the pollution and public health problem in the working and living environment; resulting the insights on price paid and the consequence behind the glory of modernization and economic prosperity. These images provoke the viewers into the search of a clean and healthy environment.
Inspiration
Inspired by contemporary artists such as Anselm Kiefer and Sally Mann, this environmental health and pollution control community project documents the heavily polluted and decaying factory campus of Wugang with abstract, lyrical and somewhat somber images. This group of photography points out the price paid and the consequence behind the glory of modernization and economic prosperity in China, provoking the viewers into the search of a clean and healthy working and living environment.
