With a minimum of materials, maximum functionality is achieved, by the use of a metal frame combined with wood and leather. Sustainability is very important, focus is on comfort, and quality materials, so that it can be used for decades. Ecological products and materials have been used for production, environmentally friendly lacquer, leather tanned with wood resin...
Japan, chair, basic form, mimalistic, ergonomic, functional, ecological,
The chair is made with basic materials such as steel, wood and leather, which makes it easy to produce. No expensive molds are needed, etc ... Despite the simplicity, new technology is used for the production. Such as a 5-axis CNC woodworking machine for the legs. And make CNC laser machine for the steel frame.
It was a challenge to develop a basic chair design with a minimum of material and construction to still design an aesthetic chair that is not only beautiful but also comfortable to sit and use. In the evolution of the design, the main aim was to leave things out to a minimum. The design was literally reduced to the essentials.
The design was developed in early 2020 and the prototype was ready by the end of 2020 in Ghent, Belgium. Now we are looking for a national or international company for the production.
The design is a basic shape of a chair. This means that the materials and finish can be tailored to the wishes of the user and thus fit into any environment. Both for the limited edition of steel, wood and leather. Or in industrial production in a finish with plastics. The basic shape has been developed from an ideal ergonomic and comfortable seat shape. With a leather seat, the leather molds to the shape of the body. When the seat and back are made in plastic the form follows the contours of the body for an ideal sitting shape.
During the design, research has been done into an ideal and ergonomic seat shape. Existing chair models have been measured for this. Afterwards, full-size models were made to test and adjust the seating shape. This design process made it possible to design the chair to its essence. A simple production method, socially and economically relevant, has also been sought. And taking into account the ecological aspect.
I found inspiration for this chair at traditional Japanese architecture. The most notable concept in this Japan collection is the sophisticated play of proportions and its metal frame, which is combined with both wood and leather. The colours of the wood, leather and metal can be custom ordered meaning the collection can be perfectly integrated into various interiors. The collection functions as a resting point; but at the same time it is meant to radiate an architectural monumentality.
