"Nostalgium" is created based upon the combination of popular Persian nostalgies and is a reminiscent of the days filled with joy and happiness in which the courtyard pond and Geraniums flowerpots surrounding it, were two inextricable elements in the architecture of courtyards in Persian Houses. The days when families used to gather in the yard, it was one of the joyful things to do before modernism. The design was inspired by these two nostalgies in order to convey aesthetic and delightful feeling of pleasant past memories. “Nostalgium“ is created from Nostalgia and Gerenium.

Unique Properties

Its recommended for everybody to hold a flowerpot by the window and through the witnessing of withering and flowering cycle, it could remind the user of how ephemeral the ordeals and troubles in life are. This has been taken from a Persian poem and was turned into the Nostalgium, thus showing signs of hope and the endings of grieves.

Production Technology

The making process of the rings gallery with the use of authentic traditional silver is a reminder of antiquity and nobility of the Persian houses. The 92.5 sterling silver was melted in workshop and then respectively was undergone rolling, sawing and soldering thus making the present shape. For the leaf-shaped part of the Nostalgium the art clay silver (fine silver) with 99.9 purity was used which was added layer by layer and then has been cooked.

Design Challenge

In this project the transformation of the Geraniums leaf to a lasting artefact which presents the softness of the leaf by keeping the velvety texture with its fragile midribs and veins, was a big deal and to solve this issue a lot of research, between art clay silver materials, was done to find the right one which possesses all the necessary conditions to transform the soft velvety leaf into a durable leaf with high-end texture; hence the mentioned silver was used.

Project Duration

Design and the ideation of this work has been started in middle of 2020 and was completed in the same year.

Operation Flow

This work includes two frames which the circular one represents the old courtyard pond in traditional Iran architecture and the square frame is a symbol of windows in those old houses where the Geraniums was the adornment of them.

Research

Based on psychoanalytic studies, anything which reminds a good memory for an individual, will lead to serotonin and dopamine secretion in the brain and these hormones reduce stress and anxiety quite drastically. This work with inspiration by the childhood nostalgia gives the user the ability to feel a good vibe, in addition to wearing a decorative artefact.

Inspiration

One of the many plants which has been present in old Persian houses is Geraniums. This plant is the popular flower of Persian grandmothers and is a reminiscent of the old Persian houses vibes where Orosi windows and courtyard pond with a lot of flowerpots are integral elements. The design has been inspired by the form of the pond, window and the eternal existence of Geraniums flowerpot with the aforementioned elements together.

Project Overview
