Chair for Jason Mizrahi Designs
The linear and curved forms of the Symphony chair animate the design. The curves are defined by the undulating frame and continue to the base where it eventually folds at an angle to bring the movement to rest. The base positions the piece firmly in place to pay respect to its function. The padded seat on the chair can be upholstered in fabric or leather.

The fluid form of the Symphony chair is marked by unexpected twists and details. The linear and curved forms of the chair animate the design. The curves are defined by the negative space in the undulating frame and continue to the base where it eventually folds at an angle to bring the movement to rest. The base positions the piece firmly in place to pay respect to its function. The padded seat of the chair can be upholstered in fabric or leather. The olive green velvet fabric of the seat injects warmth into the nominated design.
chair, metal, custom, sculptural, modern
Symphony is a single unit with the metal formed into a seamless and continuous flow. The single sheet of metal was tested for structural stability when rolled into an undulating shape with a sharper turn at the base. The arm supports were meticulously welded into the frame to ensure seamless joints. The material was polished prior to applying the powder coat, which can be customized. The nominated design has a bronze powder coat. The seat cushion can be covered with either leather or fabric.
The only challenge was finding the right material that was both flexible enough to be manipulated into a sinuous shape, and rigid enough to support its structure. It also had to be light in weight to accommodate its function. Tests performed on aluminum proved it to be the ideal material that met all of those requirements to support a structurally stable design.
The project started in Los Angeles in 2017 and the design was launched at the 2017 Architectural Digest (AD) Design Show in New York. For the AD Design Show, Symphony had a black powder-coat finish. The back and seat cushions were covered with flame-colored velvet fabric. It was subsequently exhibited at the 2017 WestEdge Design Fair in Santa Monica, California in its current bronze finish. Symphony received the award "Best Innovative Product Design" from the American Society of Interior Designers during the WestEdge Design Fair.
The Symphony is not only a functional and comfortable chair for enjoying a book in the living room or by the fireplace, it also makes one feel that you are incorporated into a piece of art.
Symphony breaks free from the restrictions and conventions of a chair having four legs. In exploring how to express movement with inanimate objects, the design of Symphony evolved. My formal training in architecture and prior collaborations with different artisans provided the tools for finding the balance between form and function. The eventual user is always at the core of my practice in creating furniture that elicits excitement without taking away function.
A chair is typically perceived as an object with four legs, is linear, and has a formal structure. Symphony breaks free from these conventions. The design is an exploration of fluid forms expressing movement. This piece evokes a dance movement by unifying elements of architecture, sculpture, and furniture. Symphony attains a balance between form and function, art and design, positive and negative space. The combination of metal and velvet fabric in Symphony embodies comfort and luxury combined with a strong silent presence.
