Meditation Chair for Ilya Legchatov
Brahma is a chair for meditation and lovers of sitting cross-legged. Once the designer's personal meditation experience had dawned him on with the need for a special chair and its parameters. The uniqueness of the chair is in the ergonomics, which allows you to sit motionless for a long time in the lotus position, as well as in the fact that meditation as a phenomenonis given a worthy place of a self-sufficient piece of furniture for the first time in a modern interior.

The chair was designed to be light weighted, easily assembled and portable. The frame consists of bent-glued plywood, foam rubber and upholstery. The legs are collapsible, assembled on 4 bolts. The material is masive beech. The legs are attached to the frame by 4 bolts.
Creative challenge: A piece of furniture is needed specifically for meditation. In addition to its purely applied significance, such a subject has a social perspective to bring the phenomenon of meditation from the level of a suspicious hobby, overgrown with a pile of mossy prejudices, to the level of a prestigious universally recognized practice of modern educated people who are healthy in body, mind and soul.
The project had started in July 2017. It was exhibited at SaloneSatellite WorldWide Moscow 2017. Then the chair became the winner of the National Award "Russian Cabriole" and the winner of competition in the field of industrial design "Art-League" in 2018. After that the chair was exhibited at the Salone del Mobile.Milano.Moscow 2018 and 2019 at the stand of Elle Decoration, the Venice Design Biennale DESIGN.VE. in 2018, Salone del Mobile. Milano 2018 in the Lambrate Design District, Moscow Design Week 2018, MAISON&OBJET PARIS 2019 and other smaller exhibitions.
The specificity of this chair is its ergonomics, which allows one to sit motionless in meditation for a long time. The whole point is in the form of a back with a protrusion under the lower back. Years of practice convinced the designer in the convenience of a certain bend and tilt of the backrest, which allows one to sit using no additional pillows. Also he added to this bend a wide seat that allows crossed legged sitting with knees not stuck out beyond the seat-plate.
15 years ago, the designer got interested in meditation as an ancient oriental self-discovery method. In purpose of practical research, for a number of years he's been visiting various meditation centers, including retreats with a Hindu spiritual guru. As a result of the research, the designer came to the conclusion about universal benefits of meditation as a natural way of self-development. It inspired him to create a piece of furniture specifically for long and comfortable meditation. Offering a meditation chair as an integral element of everyday interior, the designer aims to shift meditation from an exotic activity of marginal social groups to a daily practice for physical, psychological and spiritual self-development.
In the world of stress one looks for ways to clean up environment, heal the body and calm mind. It leads to meditation, for which home furniture is barely fit due to the armrests, the slope of a backrest, the width of a seat, and the heap of blankets and pillows on the floor alarms guests. My own practice led me to settings of an ideal chair: wide seat under knees comfy back bend - no extra pillows fine shape above the floor level. Thus was born a ultimate item of modern interior.
Brahma Meditation Chair has been a Iron winner in the Furniture Design award category in the year 2021 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition.
