Wearable Ventilation System for Ofri Shapira
Mashav is a wearable ventilation system that provides comfortable, breathable protection in hot conditions. It uses the "Chimney Effect" to create air circulation within the garment and includes a solar ventilation system in the hood to enhance airflow to the neck and head. Inspired by the traditional "Galabiya" dress worn by Bedouin society in the desert, Mashav combines traditional clothing with modern design. The project offers a solution to the increasing demand for protective clothing as temperatures rise due to the climate crisis and a fresh perspective on the evolution of apparel.

Mashav is a two-piece garment that addresses the increasing need for comfortable, breathable clothing as temperatures rise due to the climate crisis. The dress utilizes the "Chimney Effect" to create air circulation within the garment, while the hood features a solar ventilation system that enhances airflow to the neck and head area. Mashav returns to the essential function of clothing - protection - and offers a new perspective on the future of apparel with its innovative approach.

The garment is constructed with a sweat-wicking fabric that also offers moderate wind protection in order to create a chimney effect. The electronic components of the garment, which include blower fans, are powered by flexible solar panels that are embedded in the plastic shell and charged by solar energy.
The project is my graduation project in Product Design Bachelor, tutored by Naama Steinbock. Started in November 2022 and finished in June 2022 at HIT - Holon Institute of Technology.
The electronic cooling system is designed to cool areas with wide blood vessels, leading to a more effective overall cooling effect. It can be operated by attaching electronic units to a garment using magnets. The magnets close an electronic circuit made of conductive yarn, allowing the units to work together. These units contain blower fans that deliver cool air through flexible pipes to the neck and head. The front zip acts as a switch to power the system.
The research began by looking for a solution for human body heat regulation in hot weather. The first step was to learn and understand the human body and its temperature regulation systems by consulting with the professor for environmental physiology Yoram Epstein. The next step was looking for a solution by searching for other animals and plants' temperature regulation processes. During this study, I found a piece of research conducted at Tel Aviv University that showed how Bedouin people had survived the extreme heat of the desert by having a suitable garment called ‘Galabiya’. I decided to take this garment, whose structure follows the principle of the chimney effect and make it more innovative and efficient by using smart textiles and adding an active cooling system.
The garment was inspired by the Galabiya, a traditional dress worn by Bedouin society in the desert. Its structure is based on the Chimney Effect, which allows for air circulation within the garment by utilizing the natural upward movement of hot air. The project was created with the intention of combining traditional clothing with modern design, resulting in a functional and culturally significant garment. The inspiration for this design came from the history and culture of Bedouin society.
