Residential for LWPD(Lin Wei Ping Design)

The client is a young and very individualistic couple who desires a unique home that can serve as both a residence and a venue for hosting parties with friends. This design extracts inspiration from water droplets. Imagining each water droplet as a distinct space, the various sizes and shapes of the droplets are combined to create a highly distinctive, dynamic, and aesthetically pleasing interior space. Divide the space with water droplets, and break through the rigid space boundary. Break the circle into curves and recombine them to form different structural patterns.

Unique Properties

This is an apartment project located in a skyscraper in the center of Ningbo. Due to the absence of other tall buildings nearby, this space enjoys excellent natural lighting conditions and views. The absence of excessive columns in this space allows designers to have the freedom to unleash their creativity. The client is a young and very individualistic couple who desire a unique home that can serve as both a residence and a venue for hosting parties with friends.

Production Technology

A large number of sustainable materials are used to complete this project, such as use low-voc(volatile organic compounds) paints on the wall and ceiling, the large-sized sintered stone were chosen for the flooring, cupboards are made of boards certified by FSC or PEFC. In addition, we used a row of stainless steel along the windows to enhance the reflection of outdoor light into the interior, making the indoor lighting brighter and reducing the need for artificial lighting.

Design Challenge

Designing and modeling curved shapes is a challenging task and spent a lot of time and effort on it. Designer spent a lot of time thinking about how to design and hand drawn floorplan. Secondly, during the construction phase, creating a curved wall was also a challenge. In the end, we used GFRG (Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum) to create the wall and ceiling shapes. This case also features custom-designed unique-shaped doors and utilizes a handle-free door opening method.

Project Duration

The project started in June 2019 and finished in October 2022. Location: Ningbo, China

Operation Flow

In consideration of consistency, try to choose natural materials and peaceful colors for floors, walls, furniture. Natural light combined with warm and comfortable furniture, the staggered texture will be more vigorous with time. The smart homes allows the client to easily switch between home mode, entertainment mode, or party mode. The nanny's room is not connected to the main space, and she can use the private elevator to access the kitchen or her own room without disturbing the client.

Research

Divide the space with water droplet, break through the rigid space boundary. Break the circle into curves and recombine to form different structural patterns. The beauty of curve lies in its bending, its flowing and its myriad changes, which can give people the most intuitive visual enjoyment. As Oscar Niemeyer said "I am not attracted to straight angles or to the straight line, hard and inflexible, created by man. I am attracted to free-flowing, sensual curves".

Inspiration

This design breaks the traditional square house pattern and extracts inspiration from water droplets. Water is the source of life. Imagining each water droplet as a distinct space, the various sizes and shapes of the droplets are combined to create a highly distinctive, dynamic, and aesthetically pleasing interior space. With the space form of a water droplets and the minimalist lifestyle concept, designer adhered to the design principle of "less is more".
