Unique Properties
The greening of ophthalmology strives to reduce the amount of discarded packaging, disposables and single-use items used in surgery. The image will be used on the cover and inside lead article of EyeNet, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology for the November 2023 Issue.

Production Technology
Created using Cinema 4D, a 3D modeling program, 3D Models, and hand-painting in Photoshop, using a stylus and tablet on a Mac.
Design Challenge
Creating a unique and pleasing botanical composition, plant by plant, that looked living and vital, to frame and enhance yet not overwhelm the central eye.
Project Duration
The project was in development for two weeks at the artist's studio in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, USA.
Operation Flow
The illustration is meant to be uplifting and hopeful by depicting a fantastical imagining of the greening of ophthalmology.
Research
The artist researched various plant choices, striving to assemble a variety of visually interesting textures. Many of the flowers and greenery are from 3D models that the artist rendered individually and then hand composed in Photoshop. The rest of the digital painting was finished by hand-painting in Photoshop to cast shadows from one element to the next, push and pull light, and add surface detailing.
Inspiration
The artist sought to create a fantasy illustration depicting a lush, fresh and burgeoning botanical environment flourishing around an heroic eye. The eye itself is fantastical, with a conjunctiva (the covering of the globe) made of Michelangelo's white dolomite marble. In contrast to the cracked marble, the iris is glowing as if illuminated from energy within.
