Armchair for Alter Ego Studio

The Lollipop armchair is a combination of unusual shapes and fashionable colors. Its silhouettes and color elements had to look remotely like candies, but at the same time the armchair should fit into interiors of different styles. The chupa-chups shape formed the basis of the armrests and the back and seat are made in the form of classic candies. The Lollipop armchair is created for people who like bold decisions and fashion, but do not want to give up functionality and comfort.

Unique Properties

The Lollipop armchair is a combination of unusual shapes and fashionable colors. The chair gives one a feeling of freedom and space thanks to the lightweight design of the armrests, which do not hinder movement. We created this armchair for people who like bold decisions and fashion, but do not want to give up functionality and comfort. Thin and durable metal rods, which form the basis of the chair, minimize the amount of material used and significantly reduce the total weight.

Production Technology

We wanted to find interesting and fashionable colors for upholstery fabrics. For us, tactility is also important, so we selected a pleasant to touch natural fabrics, so that the client could sit comfortably. A metal frame with a powder coating was used for the basis.

Design Challenge

The challenge consisted in finding a form that would not look caricatured and hypertrophied. The functionality of the chair is very important to us as an integral element of quality design. We wanted the silhouettes of the chair and color elements to look remotely like candies, but at the same time the chair could fit into interiors of different styles.

Project Duration

The project is created in April, 2018 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The production start is intended in 2018.

Operation Flow

Convenience of transportation and logistics is achieved due to the dismountable construction. Thanks to the soft natural fabrics on the chair, you can sit comfortably for a long time. A small backrest angle maintains the correct position of the back, which makes the chair universal for dining, working or reading.

Research

When designing the Lollipop chair, we were developing the Yummy Interiors collection. It is based on the idea of creating appetizing furniture that resembles famous sweets and one of them is lollipop. It is recognizable and popular in different countries of the world so we decided to convey the brightness of the color and the variety of shapes that are peculiar to this candy. We wanted the chair to evoke the same positive emotions and joy as the candy can do. Also it was important that the chair did not lose in comfort and functionality. In the process of development, we communicated with experienced orthopedists and traumatologists in order to achieve the healthy position of a user's back. We tried several options, changed the proportions of the seats and armrests, until we reached the optimal ergonomic shape that is comfortable for long sitting on the chair.

Inspiration

Inspiration can come at any time and the idea of creating a Lollipop armchair appeared when we visited the Sweet Museum. The chupa-chups shape formed the basis of the armrests and the back and seat are made in the form of classic candies. We wanted to create a bright expressive armchair which would organically look in different styles of interior.
