The challenge was to create a lamp made of modules that could itself be a module for endless possibilities light installations. It can be used as a single unit or combined with other types. The project started in 2016 in Italy and finished in 2018 in China. Wave was exhibited in Hong Kong Lighting fair 2018
The lamp has a visual duality. When lit, the waves that reflect the light create a suggestive chiaroscuro effect givig the lamp a visual perception of depth which changes depending upon the viewing angle. The light beam sways thanks to the wavy rings of the lamp creating evocative shadows. When switched off, the lamp appears more dense and sculptural.
The starting point was a combination of emotional encounter with light and a material experiment. The material research focused on the translation of 2D planar geometry in 3 dimensional forms. Until the final form of Wave was realized, diverse prototypes has been constructed to get the best result. The exact shape of the wavy rings, the distance between them, the colors, the way the rings reflect were researched in many ways to have the best indirect light source.
The idea was to channel the light beam so that thanks to the sinuosity of the components it sways as if inside is hiding a secret source of light. This lamp is made of plastic wavy rings held together by steel rods. The ring viewed from the side looks like the infinity sign, depicted by the undulating movement that has no beginning and no end.
