Iris

Lamp for Ventura Lab

Iris is a small table lamp with indirect lighting, controlled by a simple dial at the top of the lamp. When turning the dial, the light starts to expand until it hits its capacity from the shape of the shade. The product's objective is to create interaction between the user and the object through a creative control that breaks pre-existing concepts in the scope of lighting products. In this way, it is able to fulfill its technical role of lighting control while generating an innovative user experience.

Unique Properties

Iris is a small table lamp with indirect lighting. Developed with the focus on its functionality and minimalist features, its lighting system allows the control of light intensity and also the regulation of the light beam that is directed upwards. In addition to controlling the intensity of light, the product has a diaphragm system that enables user interaction with the product, controlling the upper light beam manually.

Production Technology

In order to arrive at the final prototype, a series of tests and models were produced until the final design was arrived at and the pieces were able to fit and work correctly. The product has very distinct production processes and materials. It has metal components, made of carbon steel, stainless steel and which are manufactured from the laser cutting process and lathe. Its dome is made of ABS plastic, through the 3D printing process, and then through a manual finishing process. In addition, it also has acrylic components, such as a small laser cut disc that protects the diaphragm system externally.

Design Challenge

The easiest way to make small-scale production of plastic parts feasible was by the 3D printing process. However, this ends up making the production cost of each piece more expensive and, consequently, the final price. In the future, the ideal would be to be able to produce the product through the injection process, which would increase investment but decrease the final cost of parts for the end consumer.

Project Duration

The project started in March 2019 in Curitiba/Brazil and finished in July 2019 in Curitiba/Brazil.

Operation Flow

The product is designed so that the lamp can be easily changed and this experience reveals important and aesthetically appealing details that cannot be seen when the luminaire is mounted. For this, a dome undocking system was developed that facilitates the process and creates interaction between the user and the product.

Research

The research consisted of studying a form of interaction between user and product that was little explored in lighting projects. For that, models were made on paper and, from them, digital models were developed for the production of the first prototypes. In order for the system to gain prominence in the piece, a simple shape was chosen for the product, leaving the protagonism for the diaphragm mechanism.

Inspiration

The development of this project was motivated by the desire to create a product that was beyond a luminous sculpture. For this project, the conceptual inspiration in aesthetic terms is in the background and serves as support for a functional lighting system. Creating a light control system was the inspiration for this project.
