IE is a fine Japanese dining restaurant serving Sushi, Teppanyaki, also the after meal sake and cigar. Designer creates a comfortable with high privacy interior with limited space for customers to enjoy a fine and relax moment. The design is like a Western and Japanese mix baby, strong Art Deco at the first glance and the details of Japanese aesthetics in a closer look.
Fine dining, Japanese Restaurant, Teppanyaki, Sushi, Art Deco, Sapele wood
Massive use of sapele wood to enforce the luxury, different selection on the geometric pattern and decorative wood moulding each room to distinguish zoning or rooms. The metallic dragonfly lightbox beautifully hidden the ventilating system inside and serve as art decoration to echo the orient style. Balcony is a place for after meal relaxation and allows the use of solar Japanese floor lamps for eco friendly energy.
To combine two different extreme styles in this restaurant is a challenge. The minimalism of Japanese culture and the larger than life style of Art Deco sounds contradict to each. Designer has to make smart selection on the two styles to make customer accept this new Japanese fine dining experience. On the technique, the ceiling height is low, the requirement of multi ventilation, and sound absorption are main challenge.
The project started in March 2019 and finished in November 2019 in Hong Kong
The exterior is a metallic screen and the auto door decorated as a flower pedal, all tasted as Art Deco. Sushi bar is in pentagon with diamond cutting bulkhead, reflection of light reduces the pressure from low ceiling. The wall behind the bar is a fusion of Japanese royal crest with art deco touch specially designed. The royal crest is a chrysanthemum, which applied as the chandelier in the VIP room as well. The room with grey painting scraping in 3 sides to highlight the huge teppanyaki table in the center.
The restaurant located in a trendy and art mall, which required the stores in it to meet its upbeat style. Designer has to come up with a new design trend, which is new orient, to think out of the boundary and well crossover the elements of Art Deco and Japanese minimalism.
Globalization influences the culinary not only on favour, but also the interior design. Japanese cuisine is the earliest Asian food whelming the world. Designer creates a new Orient style for IE, the Japanese restaurant, to breakthrough the traditional thinking on authentic cuisine should be decorated in traditional way.
