Architecture Activation for WAY Architects
Located in a historical relic preservation area, the building has a history of 150 years. Adhering to the concept of protecting and reusing the historical buildings, this project transforms it into a multi-functional composite cultural space that can accommodate different scenes, including a cultural art gallery, and tea house for the community. Awakening the long-term dormant state of this historical building, it has become an open public space integrated into the urban context and reconnecting the community.

Located at No.41 Shamian Street on the central axis of Shamian Island, the project was built in 1862 with a history of 159 years. Adhering to the concept of protecting and reusing the historical buildings, this project transforms it into a multifunctional composite cultural space that can accommodate different scenes, for example, cultural art exhibition, and tea house for the community.
Architecture, renovation, culture, building, public space
The exterior of the building retains its original style: within the symmetrical form, precise proportions of doors and windows, and rich moldings lines. By now, stepping into the gate of Ceremonial sense will absolutely open up a new spatial experience.
Using a section of space as a transition for the entrance, outstanding from the old sense of form; on top of the uses of spacial transition at the entrance, it added new material and design techniques to emphasize the difference, and thus collision between the old and the new style has begun.
The project started in May 2020 and finished in January 2021 in Shameen Island, Guangzhou, China.
New materials, new forms of design, and the newest lighting techniques are added to the classical space, interactive with the old pillar system; new things do not adhere to the old structure, and the relationship between the new and the old is clear.
Awakening the long-term dormant state of this historical building, it has become an open public space integrated into the urban context and reconnecting the community. The language of the space is concise and lively, and the space still playing the pure beauty of decoration.
Inspired by the local context, the texture of the sandy floor contrasts with the black stone. The horizontal of the three kinds of grain on the stones interspersed with the white volume, which implies the historical meaning of Shamian which washed by the water of the time immemorial Pearl River.
