The patterns are unique because they are created with the studio's digital software, mov.i.see, which uses body movement to reconstruct digital data and reveal organic details not possible solely by programming. This enables he design team to create asymmetrical, non-repeat patterns that are very different from those made using traditional methods eg. mirroring or repetition. Finished by hand, the patterns are digitally-printed onto natural fabric which enables the design team to reproduce the fine detail of the designs.
Digital design, digital print, wool, scarf, textile design, pattern, contemporary, new aesthetic, COVID-19, pandemic
The design team uses a bespoke interactive software, mov.i.see, to create digital patterns. Mov.i.see uses body movement to reconstruct digital data and reveal organic details not possible solely by programming. For this Collection, the team used, for the first time, layered design to bridge the gap between the figurative and the abstract to represent the complexity of the COVID-19 virus. Digital printing techniques reproduce the fine detail of the original designs whilst retaining the special colour-pattern combinations. Pure fine-combed wool holds the ink and reveals the detail of the pattern.
The challenge was to create patterns inspired by the difficult circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic that were colourful, optimistic and playful. The team researched thematic concepts and colour-ways, and experimented with mov.i.see to create the new patterns. The designers used, for the first time, layered design to integrate distinctive abstract patterns with figurative symbols (eg. houndstooth). The patterns were modified whilst they were being created, rather than allow the software to wholly dictate the design; consequently, the patterns reveal the authorship of the designer.
This Collection was inspired by the peculiar circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. The design team started designing the patterns in September 2020 and completed the project in February 2022 when the patterns were launched in New York City.
A pure wool scarf with a digitally-printed pattern which can be worn as a gender-neutral fashion accessory. The studio produces unique and dynamic patterns that can be applied to playful, aesthetically-pleasing and desirable products. With asymmetrical and unique colour combinations, the scarf can be worn in different ways and to reflect individual expression, and fit changing fashion needs and occasions. Patterns are printed through the wool, so each pattern is double-sided. The wool is specially treated so that it is very comfortable and non-abrasive to the touch.
The design team creates unique patterns using a bespoke digital software programme (mov.i.see), which uses body movement to reconstruct digital data and reveal organic details not possible solely by programming. Inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic, the team aimed to apply the designs to a saleable commodity - pure wool scarves - that are colourful, optimistic and playful. Through trial and error, the team found digital printing techniques that reproduce the fine detail of the original digital designs whilst retaining the special colour combinations. The scarves are retailed and exhibited internationally.
The 2022 patterns represent a personal creative response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Physically stranded between studios in two countries during national lockdowns, the design team looked inwards for inspiration. Longing to escape to a utopian paradise, the team envisaged a journey to a fantastical world. The response was fantastical, ethereal and playful patterns based on the imagined journey, incorporating radically new pattern structures and colour combinations.
