PlantC is made for human everyday friends, specifically house plants. Most people have some plants in their homes or offices for various purposes. However, people often forget to take care of their quiet little friends due to busy schedules or other occupations. PlantC is designed to give people a break from their busy schedules and has 1:1 time with those plants. People can identify unfamiliar plants, learn about their unique characteristics, build profiles for their own plants, and customize daily reminders to take care of them through PlantC.
User Interface, interactive interface, UI, UX, human-centered design, design thinking
The design process documentation was kept in google drive. The surveys were conducted in Google Forms. The interview was conducted via Zoom meeting. The visual designs(low-fidelity and high fidelity) and the prototype was generated through Adobe XD, Illustrator, and Photoshop. If this app has a chance to be launched in the real world, conducting user testing and iteration will be the essential step to achieving a better user experience.
The greatest challenge is to differentiate this application from other existing ones. In the plant care mobile application market, lots of products are built for general plant care and professional gardener. PlantC is meant to be different. Its purpose is for people with a few plants for leisure to have a a better experience with identifying and taking care of the plants. Once the detailed user profile is built, the UI/UX design is to serve the best of their interest and create value for them. Market research is the way to establish a detailed user profile and validate the actual needs. Based on the result of the research and follow-up surveys, PlantC is successful in differentiating itself through UI design and user experience.

After onboarding, the login/sign-up page reminds users to create a profile to add their plants. The homepage offers a simple and clean design showing registered plants' room condition and watering level. Users can also scan the plants by using the camera to recognize the breed and obtain detailed information. If the user registered plants in their profile, PlantC would send a notification to the user when the plant needed anything.
Market research, composed of large-scale surveys and focus groups, was performed to validate the need for such an application and to study the potential preferences of the UI interface. The large-scale surveys, powered by Google Survey, focused more on validating the need. Over 300 people participated in the survey. More than 70% of them currently have house plants, and 90% of participants had or attempted to have them in the past month. The focus group was composed of 20 random people who fit PlantC’s target user profile. The interviews were conducted via Zoom Meetings. The participants were asked to fill up the survey and choose between different design preferences. The result of the focus group indicated that simple to use is the highest ranked feature. The color set of #52A54E green and #FDFDFD white is one of the most preferred sets due to its sense of refreshing, light, free, etc. After the design was finished, a follow-up survey was sent out for feedback. The survey result indicates that 90% of the participants will choose PlantC over other products based on the first glance of UI design. Have you ever purchased a plant just because it looks good at a glance? Have you ever left flowers or plants at home that perished just because you don't know how to take care of them? Many people have experienced those moments. Making plants grow is not as simple as it seems. Various plants have different requirements for watering and taking care of them. Under these contexts, a practical and recognizable mobile application is necessary for people who lack relevant knowledge to recognize plants, pick the one that suits their needs, and take care of them.
