The bamboo weaving element and raw material labelling also express the brand concept of Natural as Nature. While ensuring an attractive appearance, using bamboo paper and oak cork also rejuvenates environmental sustainability.

Unique Properties

Laizhou Distillery in Qionglai, Sichuan Province, officially introduces its first gin brand and exclusively created packaging, Jiao Yu Gin. The packaging combines the bamboo weaving culture of Sichuan with local natural elements, aiming to entice the drinker into an enjoyable drinking journey while sensing the unique flavour of the Sichuan and Chongqing regions, thus making the brand a distinctive imprint in the wave of spirits localisation.

Production Technology

The traditional glass bottle, biodegradable bamboo paper label and oak cork.

Design Challenge

The challenge was to create memorable packaging for local spirits that is also environmentally friendly. Therefore, the packaging innovatively incorporates the bamboo weaving culture of Sichuan, conveying the natural and pure concept of localised brewing. Meanwhile, the classic glass bottle, biodegradable bamboo paper label and natural oak cork can be recycled, commendably realising sustainable development and environmental protection.

Project Duration

The project was designed and developed in 2022 in Shanghai and Qionglai, and launched in July 2023 in China.

Operation Flow

The slender and soft curved body of the bottle, combined with the bamboo shape reliefs on the surface, provides customers with a more comfortable holding experience and a more layered sense of touch. With good sealing performance, the oak cork is convenient for customers to drink the bottle several times. Moreover, the classic label is designed to increase the reading pleasure for customers through the rigorous layout of information and refreshing colour contrasts.

Research

The design team found that Gin, the number one spirit of the world, was marketed in a modern but limited and unmemorable manner of packaging; however, consumers prefer the package with unique local imprints. Therefore, the packaging of Jiao Yu innovatively combines local ingredients and traditional cultural elements to form a visual symbol with brand memory, opening up new market possibilities in the New Consumption Era.

Inspiration

Inspired by the representative bamboo element of Sichuan and Chongqing, the azure blue bottle is a harmonious fusion of slim, soft lines and bamboo weaving reliefs, representing an elegant, graceful, but modest texture. As the liquid flows underneath the bottle reliefs, enhancing the beauty of each other, create a profound visual appeal through the meets and mixes of regional culture and gin flavours.

Project Overview

Jiao Yu Gin Packaging has been a Silver winner in the Packaging Design award category in the year 2023 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill. Silver A' Design Award recipients are recognized for their contribution to raising industry standards and advancing the practice of design. Their work often incorporates original innovations and elicits a strong emotional response, making a notable impact on the improvement of everyday life.
